1/3 & 2/3 Bench seats

Post by AlanH »

Hi all,

I'm looking for photos of genuine bench seat covers as they were installed in the single/double cab and Westy or non walk through Early Bays.
I have restored a set of frames but before I order the covering I would like to get an idea of what I should get as there is a large variety ie basket weave, square weave, smooth OEM classic, vintage vinyls.
What I also need to confirm from the photos is the seat shape. ie. did the earlybay have an adjustable drivers seat? how did it differ from the late bay seat ? Same for the back rest do they differ between the older and newer bays?

I could also post pictures of the frames to get clarity.

Appreciate any help

OK, judging by the lack of response this might be a topic no one is sure about.
Here are some pictures. I actually am sure that the 2/3 bench is correct.

I have two different drivers seats and I suspect the one is original earlybay whereas the other is a later bay seat, also adjustable.
While taking the pictures I actually found the drivers seats being the same size with subtle differences. The adjustable seat has a wire at the top whereas the older seat has a formed frame. I could modify the newer seat to incorporate the formed frame if it serves any purpose.

Shape and size wise they seem to be all the same.

Hi Alan, Fridays are usually pretty quiet of the forum, hence the lack of replies lol !

What year model is your Kombi ? Is it a bus ? You are correct, the seats are not interchangeable between all models. I have purchased seats before for a project only to discover they don't fit. Do you intend importing "ready made" covers or having the upholstery done locally ?

Hi Alan. Yes, seats are different.

Style/mechanism used between 1968 and 1974 is the same. 1975 to 1979 differs.

They don't interchange due to a different seat rails. They are very easy to identify. The early ones are quite flat and have the 2 adjustment arms under the seat. The later ones are more of a "bucket seat" and have the lever on the one side next to the hinge.

Split window 2/3 seats do not fit the baywindow either.

I will post some pics tomorrow.

Hi Guys,
Many thanks, Fig sent me some pictures from his Westy. I am confident I have the right frames from all the replies.
I have been looking at pictures from all over and it seems the TMI covers are like original.
I am yet to see reupholstered seats in SA that look decent. I should be getting my hair Seat Pads tomorrow.
I better get cracking with the preparation of the frames. But I will order the TMI covers soon. Just need to be 100% sure of the colour I need.
