If I am not mistaken just fill her up with 93 or 95 as per your preference next time.

My 76 Kombi and 81 MotoGuzzi (motorcycle) don't seem to care about lead anymore.

Every three or so fill-up's, mix in two thirds of a bottle of Valve Ease into your fuel. You can buy it at any spares shop. Makro sells it too. It's a small bottle of "lead supplement". Aircooled motors need this unless you have the valve guides changed to suit unleaded fuel. Only add this proportion of Valve Ease as long as you drive the car often. If it stands a lot, make it less concentrated as Valve Ease can foul the carb' as the fuel evaporates from it when the vehicle stands. Without supplementing the fuel, you could suffer stuck valves.

The beetle engine was unleaded ready for many years before unleaded was even available.
What do you need to do to run it on unleaded? Follow the steps below
1) stop using LRP

thats it.

72bugman - I'm not sure if you want a stuffed engine or not. These cars were never developed to run on unleaded as it wasn't available then. It's common knowledge. Thank you for asking, though. Do at will. It might be that these other chaps are on kickbacks for engine-rebuilds or something... All I can say is that I have enough aircooled VW's to know. They are used daily, for work and pleasure and I run them on additives. Oh, and matching-number Oval, again, used daily, also runs same.

Sidebar: @Tony-Z: nice welcome back bud'. Strike.

@GavinHuart
Yes, the beetle engine was developed before unleaded fuel - no secret there.
The requirements for an engine to run unleaded fuel are phosphor bronze (or similar) valve guides and hardened valve seat inserts.
The beetle has these, no secret here either.

In the 90's when I was still using my beetle as my daily driver, lead was phased out. I never once put in LRP and did about 60 000km with unleaded.
I now have two massively expensive beetle engines in my collection neither of which have ever seen a drop of LRP. Failures so far due to no additives = zero

Not knocking you, we all do what we believe is right.
The fact of this matter is that the VW is capable of running on unleaded without issues. That is a fact.
If additives work for you, then use them.
No-one knocked your option.

Your oval however is likely to not have the correct valve seats to run unleaded. Here you would likely need LRP or additives.
But 72BugMan wasnt asking about an oval, he was asking about a car capable of running unleaded.
