Re: Weber 40 IDF kit for Variant 411
What has been done before is to fit a set of twin Weber DCOE sidedraft carbs. Sometimes done by using some modified fuel injection manifolds from a 411LE. Most Alfas had those carbs. Then your engine lid can still fit in a stationwagon application.
The twin carbs from a type 4 car are different and simpler/better than the kombi version, and more sought after. (The lefthand carb does not have the "emission- afterthought" third carb effort). Most parts are still interchangeable with those from the kombi. Mostly it should still be fixable.

Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.

Re: Weber 40 IDF kit for Variant 411
Unfortunately Braam's carbs have actually got parts missing from them. I did what i could for them and even though they are much better than they were, they arent right and are far from right.
It was my suggestion for him to source an IDF kit as they are easy to tune. The second option is the ICT kit, which Herman swears by but I am not too fond of.

Re: Weber 40 IDF kit for Variant 411
How can you say a thing like that...
Just because I have a set on each of my toys.....
Yes I think they the best all rounder, So if you have a new Genuine Weber 34ICT set"s I will take the junk off your hands, dispose of it in a ecological manor, and ride the CAPE of this scourge..........
Herman
PS;- May have to have manifolds cut for these 40 IDT to fit under lid.

Some manifolds, shortened to have the required clearance in Variant application, Dells, IDF's could fit as well:
DCNF's, which are shorter, (Posted by Eben):

This kit here seems to have the really short manifolds

Re: Weber 40 IDF kit for Variant 411
I'm not convinced that those two CB kits will work in the variant.
The first one looks like a much better option

Re: Weber 40 IDF kit for Variant 411
I think you correct, but should he take the other options he will have to get the manifolds cut as per Davie's post.
Nice thing about using the 34ICT kit, is you can use the Kombi Air cleaner system that fit with ease under the engine lid.
Trust me, have done it before with my Fastback, it takes a bit of modification to get it right.

Re: Weber 40 IDF kit for Variant 411
What are your expectations... (like modified for more power or just running nicely).
Which carb parts are missing? Is the original aircleaner setup, linkages, etc all still there.
Of course twin IDF's would be ideal, but those are tall carbs. Set up properly with velocity stacks and good sized aircleaners, will be a problem below the stationwagon's low enginelid. And raising that lid would be plain silly and ruin the car's practicality. DCNF's are shorter, but not everybody likes them.
In a type 1 application, twin single throats are a good improvement over it's single carb. (Which sits far away from the heads).
In your case, you already have twin single carbs, so not much of an improvement.
Because of the firing order, (not evenly spaced between left and right):
A single throat per 2 cylinders each side goes "draw, draw, wait, wait, draw, draw, wait, wait....."
If it was that simple... but actually there is an overlap period between each "draw, draw", which is where the real problem lies. At certain rpm's, on each side, during overlap, one cylinder will rob a bit of it's neighbor's flow. At medium load/ partial vacuum, during overlap, one cylinder will draw some used exhaust gas from it's neighboring cylinder.
Although it's not nearly as bad as a single port/ siamesed inlet engine, were one cylinder is robbing it's neighbour all the time, resulting in the 2 limping and 2 hard working cylinders of a singleport...
So twin single carbs gets the job done much better than a single, but, given a choice, one throat per cylinder would be better.

Re: Weber 40 IDF kit for Variant 411
I would rather sort out those original twin carbs. I know they can be an absolute pain, but when they are working perfectly, the drivability is an absolute pleasure.
The twin ICT is a simple option as they just fit onto the original manifolds, I've done it on my one bus, they work well, but don't give it anymore power. They much better than a busted old set of solex's, but not better than a really well set up set of solex's.

I had my twin carbs on my Mercedes 220S Ponton rebuilt by Carburettor Repair Centre in Paarden Eiland and they are like new.

Re: Weber 40 IDF kit for Variant 411
Yip so Tony will be able to share more details on which parts were missing on the Solex’s , but as it stands now there is a huge flat spot as soon as you go up the rev range . My personal preference will always be stock working 100% but I don’t know how I can have the Solex carbs back to top condition.
