What now - WHY ?

Post by spicydave »

Hi All

My type-4 2000cc have been running a bit "lazy" the last few weeks

What I've done so far on recomendation:

1. Replaced Coil with Bosch (0221119027)
2. Replaced Spark Plugs
3. Replaced Plug Wires
4. Replaced Distributor Cap (yesterday afternoon)
5. Both carbs have been serviced with new kit
6. New oil
7. New oil filter
8. New air filter

Yesterday we drove around 150km without any issues and had a nice outing

Once home I've fitted the new distributor cap as mentioned above and my motor sounded much better and revs nicely

As I wanted to take it for a "test" run down the road it started with a "knocking" sound about 100m from my property

I turned around and went back home on idling speed

I thought it might me the alternator as it sounded that the sound is from there so I removed the fan-belt but still the same

What can the cause be of this sudden "knocking" sound ???

Any help will be appreciated

Thanks
H

Check the oil level first and you are using the correct oil grade. Is it a CU or CJ.
My thinking was based on the CU motor with hydraulic lifters.I think Herman may have hit the nail on the head with the plug wires.

The only two things I can think of that are not in your list are:

(1) Condenser
(2) valve clearances

I would 'complete' the items for a full service and then check again. Condensers have been the bane of my existence at times.

The 1st thing I would do is remove the plugs, and have a look for a wet plug.

Many guys have fitted a new set of champions, and one or two have died.

If so, fit new NGK plugs or fit the old plugs and test again.

Let us know what you find with the plugs.

Think the VW aircooled runs too hot for Champions....

From your video, it sounds like you have plug 3 and plug 4 mixed up.
