Flickers come on but don’t flash / hazards do flash

Post by Braamn »

What do you experts think is the problem? Surely if it was the flasher relay the hazards would not flash? Anything else I can check?

What type of flasher are you using, and do you have LED bulbs in the indicators ??

Are you using the correct model year flasher unit and is it plugged into the correct place. ??

I had a similar problem, but it would only happen when motor was at very low idle, charging was the problem (I had a generator)
If it is not a charging problem I suspect an earthing problem.
No sense being pessimistic. It wouldn't work anyway.

I had a similar problem (on my motorcycle) where the bulbs had too low wattage (candle power or CP). The unit required a certain amount of resistance to trigger the on/off/on/off function.

So with only left or only right there was not enough resistance BUT with both left and right at the same time and with the increased resistance the unit flicked perfectly.

When I changed the bulbs all was good.

Not sure this will help but worth I check

Just an update , Hazards are not flashing , so surely that means it’s the flasher relay

If you have no left, right, or hazards then its the wiring not done correct or the flasher relay.

Take the relay out and connect to it directly with bulbs to check if it flashes.

If it does out the car then the wires are wrong. If not, get a new one.

Remember that the indicators don't work without the key but the hazards work with either a key or no key.

Did the car perhaps get wet? With a 411, the winscreen rubber has to seal 100%. If not, water will find its way into the flasher unit. (Which lives behind the fuse box). If its the older type unit, this could simply by opened, emptied of water and dried.
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.

I tried the hazards with ignition off and they flash , as soon as I turn the ignition on it stops , time to visit the auto electrician

You could go to your auto electrician to sort you out, but at some stage you'd need to figure out things on your own, e.g. when you have a fault far from home and you don't have the luxury of waiting for the AA to come pick you up. Armed with a wiring diagram and some basic tools the electrics on air cooled vehicles are not beyond most DIYers. Once you've spent some nights with the diagram and your car's wires you'll start to work without the diagram. This might seem obvious, but always keep your wiring as original as possible. There's nothing worse than faultfinding a vehicle with non-standard wiring, at night, in a remote location. I've seen this on vehicles repaired by some auto electricians.

Dont forget the box of fuses you can blow a few trying to find the problem.I use a piece of wire with a inline 5 amp fuse to test wires.

So, even with hazard swich pulled out, lights stop flashing when ignition is switched on? (Engine not started yet?)

Under the dashboard should be a "multiple spade point"- piece of metal attached to chassis. This is where many brown wires should attach for their earth/chassis/ negative connection. One of those would be the flasher unit's earth connection. Look behind cubbyhole. If weird things happen, first check earths.

Checked all connections , cleaned up all the wiring connections , problem solved
