Refurbish a 1971 big reference book

Post by davemiles1978 »

Does anyone know of any books to buy to help refurbish a type 1, 1971 bug 1600. I’m trying to figure out the dashboard as previous owner had installed a modern switch to fix some issue with lights instead of getting correct switch, dash now has 3 holes at the top and as I installed correct light switch there is an empty hole. Wondered if there is meant to be anything there, so far I got lights and wipers

Heynes manuals are good, otherwise, the Bentley Manuals which ore reproductions of the VW USA workshop manuals, but pretty pricey
Jump onto Amazon and see what they offer, then check if you can get the same at takealot

Thanks for the photo. That’s exactly what I feared, guess I’ll need to figure out how to fix the extra hole

You could turn it into a feature of sorts - hang something from it, make a cell phone carrier....

If you go to your local rubber shop (pro-auto rubber) you can get a rubber bung that will fit and look as it is a place for an accessories

Ideally you would want the Owner's Manual for your car. This is normally a thin booklet which accompanies the car when bought new. Some screenshots below. In the absence of this, if it's just the dashboard you want to sort out, you don't need to buy a book. Google it.

Ok so checking my owners manual there is a third hole in Centre for brake light or something like, was a European option but I think that I could install this and it would still look stock

Could you please post a pic of your dashboard? The third hole in the centre sounds a bit strange to me.

Just to throw a spanner in the works ... my chassis nr starts with 1112 which makea it a 1971 model aswell But my dash has 4 holes
Far left is lights and far right is the wiper switch but inbetween them there is a smaller hole and a bigger one .Both the extra holes arent perfectly round but has a flat section
