2nd Gear??? well I just cant find it

Post by vfront »

I was driving home the other night in my '74 Beetle and went to change down to second and it just wasn't there any longer.

I can get it into first with a bit of difficulty, reverse 3rd and 4th are all working.

Any advise on what the issue could be, how to repair it and possible costs related.

Thanks in advance

Howzit,
I'll be the ever optimist and say it "should" be a cheap and easy fix to replace the various Nylon bushes bother under the gear lever, as well as the rear square coupling to the Gearbox, and then lastly, to reset the tunnel mounted selector plate. I don't think it's gearbox internals, (well at least, I hope not), I'm sure there would be other complications if it was.

Good luck, let us know the outcome.

Yes, check the front (FIF) transmission mounting first. If it's torn then the rears will most likely also need replacing.
