Case Modifications for Smaller Engines

Post by Simmy »

So I have been considering what to do with my engine during the rebuild, but I don't have the depth of knowledge to know what makes sense or is just plain stupid.

So far I like the ideas relating to:
  • Pulling the oil gallery plugs for cleaning, followed by a replacement with tapped plugs
  • Bob Hoover's HXV oil system mods - I am really nervous about extending the oil galleries and modifying brand new followers
  • John Maher's mods - which also make reference to the HVX mod above
I can certainly make sense of the first two on a purely mechanical level, but have no idea if the time and effort amount to significant benefits for a small engine (1776) which will only be a weekend runabout.

I would really like to hear some thoughts or experiences if people have tried any / all of the above.

Not sure why a Standard VW twinport engine will not do as it will only be a "weekend runabout"

If it is due to parts availability only, pistons and barrels set can still be got from Alert Parts.

Hi Herman,

I was trying to indicate that it is not a daily driver, but is really just for fun with a moderate power output of 100-110HP... so expect some enthusiastic driving :)

The engine size compromise came from a budget and a preference for high quality parts. So really I am trying to get the most out of everything, hence the question.

I did the HVX mod on my current engine build, as an experiment. The engine is not running yet, so can't venture an opinion on the merits of the mod.

All I can advise, is that you measure the required depth of the new galleries very carefully. Be sure that you will have enough material all around the new galleries to prevent breaking through, into or out of the case.

Make sure you have a positive stop on the drill bit. Magnesium grabs the bit, and before you know it, you've gone too far...case turned to scrap!

Some cases I've come across, cannot be drilled for the HVX mod, due to limited material next to the #2 exhaust lifter bore. The drill bit could break through to the inside of the case, causing an internal case oil leak, resulting in loss of oil pressure.

Lastly, measured 400 times before you unpack the drill! Good luck

I also want to do the hvx mods with my engines but was a bit concerned about breaking through on the inside of the case as mentioned. Any idea where to get a long metal drill bit or did you make another plan?

I bought a 6 X 250mm drill bit from an engineering supplies company.

You can try any good hardware store (builders etc dies not fall into this category). In Pretoria you can try for example GemTool
