1974 beetle

Post by Nick Stander »

My 74 1600 single port does this. It will drive fine through all the gears, idle, no problem. Then intermittently the idling will drop substantially and it smothers through all the gears absolutely lethargic spitting backfire and then all of a sudden it will be right again. Only to do it later again on a daily basis. Driving me crazy

Hi And welcome.

Think start with your float levels, think they are not closing your needle and seat.

They should be 14 mm from the top when you remove the float chamber cover.

Hi, thank you. Wanted to add to this, does it hot or cold, in other words, cold start in morning or hot start after switching it off. But always intermittently. Idles fine all the time just either fast or slower. The problem never surfaces whilst driving only when I switch off and restart. But it comes right whist driving, all of a sudden it's perfect.

I will have a look at the float level ASAP. Tnx for the advice.
