Gearbox querie

Hi Guys,
My Westy has 3 rib gearbox with the ears on the top installed.
I'm not sure if this is the correct gesrbox since there is nowhere for the ears to be fixed to. It also does not look as though the mountings were removed.
It's just weird that the gearbox is not at all supported when the engine is removed.
Is that normal?

Early bays did not have a mounting above gearbox. Only support was at the nosecone and rear engine hanger.

The gearbox may be 1600, but the bellhousing is from a 2000l. It was obviously swapped to accommodate that foreign engine better. Your bus should have 1600 bellhousing and the early variety without the ears. You can however fit your 1600 motor into that bellhousing if you need to.

Thanks guys,
Sean are you saying I don't need another bellhousing and that the 1600 will fit without mods?

Yes, you can just use that existing setup. I would personally source a 1600 starter motor and bellhousing without the ears just for completeness, but it’s not neccesary.

Thanks Sean,
In that case I would be open to a swap. If anyone needs a bellhousing with ears for their project I would take their bellhousing without ears.
Are the starters not the same? If not the starters would need to go with the bellhousing.

However,...... what's that reservoir doing up there to the right ?

I might just have the bellhousing you need had the same scenario but had the one without the ears in and had to get the one with the ears on top. Ended up buying one with ears did not work then got a complete gearbox and almost there now so you can pm me no problem

@ Haans, It's a remnant of the Toyota engine I removed. Has since also been removed, going back to 1600 aircooled.

@ Freddiebooysen, pm sent tx.

Just to revive this topic.
Is there a length difference between the two bellhousings?
Why I am asking is because I need the engine to fit back onto the original moustache bar mounting, which would be an issue if the bellhousing with ears is longer. I suspect it is longer since the starter motors have different shaft lengths.

In that case I am still looking to swap my bellhousing with ears for one without.

Yes, it seems there is a shorter and a longer version of the bellhousing without ears, and the matching longer throw starter is required.

The longer and shorter version of the bellhousing are the varieties with ears. Ons without are all for shorter type 1 style motors.

You engine mounts will not line up correctly if you use the longer bellhousing.

Tx Sean,
Exactly what I thought.

So, I'm in the market for a "No ears" bellhousing. Have one with ears to swap and I think it would be the long one since I also have a starter with a long shaft.
If anyone knows the lengths I could measure an add them here.

Ok,....you opened a can here!,...and chucked the lid away!
We,....son has a '70 single cab and it will soon udergo surgery to have a 2L golf motor fitted .......yes all kill me !,...not my choice!! But here's the kicker, it has the "non ears" bellhousing in and engine is fitted with moustache bar at the pulleyside.

Question,...also have an "ears" bellhousing. That I believe would be "better" in terms of torque control. What is the length difference between the bellhousings ?
Cannot measure the "non ears" in the kombi at the moment,....does anybody know?

Allen,...once call is made this side on which bellhousiing to use,...you could have a "non ears" bellhoussing ,..after negotiations....depending on your time frame.

Its only a difference of 10 mm and the rubber mount on your mustache bar will take the difference

Had no problem fitting the ear box to the bay, when fitting the type 4 2lt motor.

If you leave the front gearbox mounts loose, you will be amassed how much forward/backward movement you do have to get the motor/gearbox combination in the right place.
