crankshaft pulley hole size

Post by FaanP »

Hi,

Can anybody please tell me what is the size of the hole where the threaded part of you crank pulley goes in? Mine is 50,5mm and my threads on the pulley is 50mm. Is this my hole size correct or to big?

It is a 1600 TP

Did a quick check on my engine casing. It measures 50.03mm.

At 50.5mm, you will probably end up with a bad oil leak.

VW did make a bigger pulley for the 0.5mm bigger hole.... you just have to dig through old spares until you find one

I have a old aluminium pulley. Will it possible to get it welded up and machined to the correct size?

anything is possible with the right amount of money
I'd rather suggest a sandseal pulley approach - this has a seal which you insert into the case and the pulley has a stainless ring on it to prevent wearing on the seal

Tony is correct, VW made oversized pulleys (111 105 253B) to solve this problem, but good luck finding one...

Easiest fix, is probability the sand seal route. You may need a custom OD seal holder to fit into the case ID, and a sleeved pulley as Tony suggested. This will be much cheaper than having a custom pulley made, to fit your case.
