Flywheel nut snapped!!#%*€£¥

Post by Haans »

So !.....replaced the oil seal....now a "decent"seal from bearing man....great!

And then I snapped off the flywheel nut !!!!!.......with some devine intervention the rest of the nut came out of the crank without fuss,.....very lucky I believe!

Now ,...is this a fluke? Has it happened to anybody before ?
Have not been around aircooleds for very long but have never heard of this happening before ?

What should I do ? To prevent this from happening again,....
I use a torgue meister converter,....good fitment of seal,.... I believe

Any advice on this lot will help

Regards Haans

I've broken one by overtightening. Luckily the stump turned out by hand.

I'm not sure a torque meister is the best way to tighten these.

Torque Meister mutipliers are known for not being very accurate. I know, they should be accurate, but they're not, due to Chinese manufacturing standards. Too much play on the gear shaft (mine has this problem), cause the gear to cock sideways in the ring gear, and drag on the gear shaft will both affect the torque setting. I only ever use mine to loosen 36mm nuts, not to tighten them. Use a properly calibrated torque wrench to tighten the gland nut.

and remember, with a 10:1 ratio ( which I think is what the torquemeister has), you need only a little nip up of the nut to ensure it is fully torqued down. 360Nm on the nut is 36Nm on the tool. Which at the end of a 19mm spanner is only about 8kg of effort, which isnt much.

One more thing !!,....make sure your wrench is in working ORDER !!!!!

Checked it first,.....this time and found it will not "click",.....you all know what this means$&&@/!
Some or other roller thinghy became "incapacitated" ! Had to put that in correctly,......and off we went into the sunset!

BIG test failed ,....but passed the second time around,......could have been a very expensive fail!

All is well that ends well!......me thinks
