72 Beetle Missfire

Post by Viper999 »

Hi All
I am new on the group so please forgive me for asking questions asked many times before.
My daughter bought a 72 beetle in good condition so as you know now its dads problem to keep it running.
So here we go
She starts fine and idles good but as soon as she warms up she starts to misfire while driving a constant speed and gets worse the longer you drive.
I have replaced the carb.
I see the distributer shaft has a lot of up and down play is this normal?
Please help my neck wont survive another trip.
Regards
Ian

Welcome and I am sure the two of you will enjoy your new toy.

Two areas to look at, one, is to pull the spark plugs and see if they wet after the run.

If so replace them with NGK, clean the distributor cap contact points inside or replace the cap with new. (old may be cracked)

You may want to clean your points contacts with emery paper as well.

I would be skeptical to change the points or condensor as the new ones are junk and may not work from the start.

Do all these things, and if still not right, change the condensor and coil.

Then I would look at your fuel filter, see if it is dirty, or blocked, could also be the filter in your tank inside the tank out let to the carb.

Good luck

Thx Herman
Will do as you suggested.
The distributer must the shaft have that play up and down?

Normally not a problem, if not too much.

Drop a few drops of engine oil in the hollow shaft after removing the rotor, this will service the shaft, and let it run smooth.
