Sand seal ?

Post by Haans »

So I've procured the latest Volksworld,....and in it some guy mentioned that he has machined a 356 crank pulley to fit with a "sand seal"?

No ! Not being the sharpest pencil in the Box,........has anybody done this in sa this ?

Take it you must have exact dimentions,......and be done at a machine shop of repute?,......and then what seal to use,.....and then the pulley to go with it ?

Who knows more about this out there in the VW world ?,...........I need to be convinced this is the next best thing since sliced cheese?
I have added some extra " breather" capacity to Haans's 1600sp,........and it seem to have worked,....."sweats" have reduced quite a bi

What say you, Haans

Morning Haans,

It has been done and can be done in a few ways. My current engine has a seal, the pulley was machined down to accommodate the seal but I cant remember if I made any change to the casing. I would say it can be done you just need to have a look at available seals to fit your dimensions and cut the pulley to suit.

Not sure if it will be worth to do it on a std-ish engine.

you can get a kit which has a aluminium sleeve machined to fit into the case and has a seal in it. Its an odd size seal and I havent found that size locally.
The pulley (aluminium) is machined down and has a stainless steel sleeve installed to reduce wear.

I've used this kit on Angrrr and am happy with it.
