hi all.....my apologies if i am in the wrong space, but i am new to this forum.
i have reached the end of my tether, after 20yrs i decided to fix my bug ,and get some enjoyment out of it ,and low and behold,i got stuck again..
it drove smoothly for a few days ,then just lost power and stalled,it started then drove for about 100 m and stalled, now refuses to start...cranks over but wont take.
i have spark on coil wire ,spark on points but no spark on plugs...i cleaned out the carb, reset timing ,reset the valves...fuel spraying into carb well.

NB i also found that the distributor shaft was wet with petrol.....i dont know what that means...
can someone please help :(

Hi Siraaj. Take out one spark plug and hold it against the engine casing or any grounded part with the plug wire connected. Crank to see if there is a spark.

This is a fire waiting to happen, is your fuel line leaking into the distributor ?

hi guys
thanks for your response,i really appreciate it.
yes , found that there was no spark on my plugs...changed my rotor and distributor cap.....my bug started....awesome

now i find an even stranger situation.....my bug starts on first swing, but starts difficult after driving for a bit....i had the starter bush replaced about a week ago. that problem was eliminated, and now the problem is back....

what should i do ?

timing might be out but you might also find your carb is leaking a little fuel into the engine when its warm and you stop.
Try this next time - when you want to start the engine, slowly put your foot on the accel pedal and push it hard down. Slowly so that it pushes less fuel into the manifold than if you do it quickly. Keep your foot there and dont release. Now crank over the engine until it starts. If this starts the engine quicker than your usual method then you are likely flooding your engine after shutdown and you might need to lower your float.
Or you could switch off the engine when you get home, remove the air filter and watch for drips down the carb for a few minutes.

thanks
i will try that tomorrow and provide feedback....
i have also adjusted the fuel pump on the side of the carb.....when i touch the throttle ever so slightly, the fuel squirts down the barrel....if i pull the throttle down more fuel runs down strongly like my kitchen mixer...is that good or bad.

that is called your pump jet. It needs to do that otherwise your car will "stumble" when you accelerate

ok cool,at least something is working properly,,hahaa

now,i just started my bug and with no hesitation it started first time.....i let the car idle for about 20 mins ...it didnt misbehave at all...no fluctuation in the idling except for when it kicks over from the choke...

revved it up a bit then turned the motor off....checked if fuel was dripping into the carb barrel....no fuel dripping..into carb

started the bug and low and behold it started almost immediately...took two short swings then started.....i think my bug is possessed :)

i feel more confidant in taking my bug for a drive,now...wish me luck...i hat getting stuck

idling for 20 minutes isnt warming up the engine to proper operating temps.
Take if for a 20km drive and then look again

hi all ,i trust that you are all well...
i took my bug for a drive today, about 25 km,had my A-frame strapped on..just in case....drove very nicely, didn't stall or misfire...in fact behaved quite well..
when i got back home,i turned the bug off and tried to restart, and that's where the problem is....it labored a bit but started after a few swings..
i'm sure somethings amiss....had to put the peddle to the floor and start.
the other problem i picked up is that i heard a noise coming from the engine side ,when i checked i saw the pulley wobble a bit .i'M sure that was the noise...should i be worried?

Other than that i'm quite happy with what i accomplished being a google mechanic :)

It could be down to your battery now, if your pulley is loose, and your belt slips, your light will go out due to you having voltage, but not enough to charge the battery fully.

Get your battery checked.
