I found that in a lot of 70s Beetles the hood release function is disabled because the lever has torn a hole in the cubby hole due to lack of lever support. I understand there is supposed to be a bracket that attaches to one of the lever bolts and to the body to give support when you press down on the lever to open the hood. In the absence of this bracket the lever will put strain on the hardboard and eventually rip a hole through it. Does anybody have a picture of this bracket? I could probably make something up for the job, but I would like to see what the original part looks like. I'm currently scared that somebody might just take a chance in a parking lot and find that my hood is open and relieve me of the luggage compartment contents.

Google has not been my friend on this quest. Maybe somebody else could be more successful.

Re: 70s Beetle Hood release lever support bracket
easiest is to convert it back to the old style hood opening system.

Re: 70s Beetle Hood release lever support bracket
Thanks Herman, but I've already repaired the hole in the cubby hole and installed the lever. It works but I need to install a support bracket so that there is minimal strain on the hardboard when pulling the lever. Shouldn't be too difficult. I also like to make things work like they did originally before trying another way.

Re: 70s Beetle Hood release lever support bracket
There should be a shortish bracket that connects with a selftapper to the nearest connector of the lever and goes down to the kneewell where it is attached with a 5 mm screw, I remember that the bracket had a curved shape and had a slight U profile to reinforce it
