Registering a Motor

Post by Harry Jones »

I need some advice on how to go about registering a motor on a car build that I
only have scrapping paper for the car not the motor
What is the procedure for a motor you have no paperwork for and have rebuild
I have bought an old case with no paperwork as "voets toets" and now rebuild it and
want to register it with the car

get an affidavit to explain how you got the engine.
Take the engine to the police clearance and have them check the number to confirm it is not stolen (you have to take the whole engine).
If no issues, put it in the car and then take the whole car for police clearance.

By taking the engine seperately, if there is an issue with it being logged as stolen, then you lose (at most) the engine. If it is in a car, then you lose the car too. With an affidavit you might get them to not impound the engine if it is stolen.

Best is if you know someone at the licensing department to run the number of the engine if clear take it for clearance,

if not, rather strip the engine and take the block in and ask for clearance,

tell them that you just bought the bloke and need clearance before spending money on it.

so all you loose is the block, and not all your expensive parts inside.

Sounds fishy that someone only has a block to sell and not as a complete engine, so do not take a chance.

If the engine is in the car, and the engine is stolen, the car WILL be blacklisted making it useless.

Good luck.

Thank you Tony and Herman for your replies, really appreciate the advise ... sounds like I am in for
a proper adventure !!
The reason I only have blocks is that over the years of my REALLY LONG term project I have collected
parts from far and wide and been to many swop meets / garage sales
I have some blocks with stamped on numbers, some with a small tag riveted on and one block with no
numbers at all
