3rd brake light !?? On a ghia

Post by Haans »

All ghia owners! And the rest that want to chip in to "adjust" my train of thought
No ! No I am not getting bored yet !!
I want to add a 3rd brake light with led bulb!....to be seen!! I thought of a "pope's nose" number plate light from an earlier beetle,.......of which I acquired a '66 beetle's And the idea is to place it in and around the spot marked in red !!
Image

But,.....due to the angle of the decklid sloping down,.....for it to be seen(the idea!). Attaching the pope's nose like that ,.....the light will shine / be seen about a metre or 2 max behind the car! Ok can trim the nose at the top to better line of sight for traffic not my arse ,.....

The next custodian( son) is not impressed with the whole idea of the pope being incorporated,...and is suggesting a "reverse type " light on the bumper behind the driver,......which the 'current' custodian is not "convinced" about.

Has anybody attempted such mod on a ghia or anything else ?

Talk to me!!!

You get a universal type led brakelight beam at midas or any auto spares shop which u fit in the inside of the rear window, on top or bottom and you can turn the beam for the right angle too be seen

Another option... This is one of the least obtrusive solutions I've seen...

Area may not be accessible if you have an early engine lid, with closed inner skin.

Definitely possible on a later engine lid.

This what I did, but fitted to a removable stand, I was sick and tired of hooting cars who could not see my 1958 tiny lights
No sense being pessimistic. It wouldn't work anyway.

Thanks gents,....
1. I am not crazy,...my gutfeel about being rearended is something to react upon
2. The next custodian(son) did throw in the LED strip inside the vent,.....least impact to the profile I suppose
3. Still "old school",....would still like to see a ."thing" sitting on the wherever !

So the hunt will be on for some or other light

Unless one of you have " just the thing" lying around???????

I used one of these alarm flashing lights 12v and I think you could adapt it to fit in another casing if need be.

Stick it on with double sided tape if need be,its not the nicest looking light but it can be adapted, remember its a fleshing light so it gets peoples attention.

Duly noted Terry, I like the idea of "fleshing"!😂😇,........sorry I cracked myself on it,.....know it was a slip!!

But the flashing part is to be pondered on !

Thanks for this
