Advice on fueling issues on CU2000
Firstly, my apologies for the lack of technical descriptions here and my (current) lack of anything but the most basic mechanical knowledge.
I have an Autovilla with a CU2000 engine that has recently has the top end rebuilt. In the process of trying to slowly run the engine in, it has stalled and failed to restart after doing about 15km's. The first time after basic troubleshooting, I disconnected the electrical connectors on the automatic chokes and it started up again. The second time, when needing to use higher revs to reverse up an incline, it stalled and restarted twice but not the third.
Both times the restart also only came after the engine has significantly cooled. When warm, it seems to me to be idling too high. So, I'm hoping for advice on the following -
1) It has an electric fuel pump installed and when disconnecting the pipes at the carbs to troubleshoot, and turning the pump on it seems to me to be providing perhaps too much fuel. Could the electric fuel pump be the weong thing for these carbs? Or, can this be solved by having the carbs set correctly?
2) I know the Autovilla is very heavy but I was expecting more from this 2L engine. Feels even more underpowered than expected. Still sticking to slow speed run in but at the moment I would doubt it would make more than 90 km/h on the highway and modest hills 50km/h seems to be the max. As the run in continues and it "loosens up", is it possible the power would increase?
3) For the run in, the first 10km from my house in any direction (except the N2) is quite hilly. For the run in, I need to choose between slower speeds but high revs or the flatter N2 but higher speeds. Is 20kms at a time on these hilly roads a problem for the run in?

Please post a photo and model number of your fuel pump.
This is a problem as these carbs will not tolerate more then 2.5psi
It could also be timing as the engine is tight, it will overheat very easy.
You could also have an electronic ignition in the distributor which cuts out on high temp, had that problem as well on a new rebuild engine.
Maybe try to fit a temporary oil temp and a rev counter, this will allow you to run it in at below 3000 rpm and below 110 deg C
Yes you will get more power when she has run in, but do not expect to run faster then 90Kph with that big body.
You can run it in with any terrain but keep the revs below 3000 and the temp below 110 C

Thanks Herman. Since posting, I have been reading other posts and seeing the need for a low pressure fuel pump. Here is a pic of mine, but I cannot find any model number on it. Seems to be the Facet cube type, but which one?

Do not know of a Facet pump that is below 3 psi
You need to get a lower pump or a pressure regulator. to take it to 2 psi

I can't say for sure it is a Facet pump. It is cube shaped so I was going off a discription of a "cube Facet pump" in another discussion thread. There are no markings on it except the flow direction and 12V. Other threads indicate these low pressure pumps are very hard to find. Any suggestions where I could get one or a pressure regulator without having to import?

Boet,....you need to take it to somebody that really know this engine!......twin carbs make it even more complicated. When you disconnected chokes,.....did you make sure ckokes are open ? Then as herman says ,....timing,.....valve settings?,....is this engine with hydraulic tappets?,...still reqiure some setting when assembled
Carbs linkage,.......opening symiltaniously,.....ie carb syncronization,.........and so you can go on. Please note I am no expert butjust a very dangerous level of knowledge.
Chuck pump away ,....get original .....facets= eventual fire!!
Hope this does'nt scare the crappers out of you.
Keep at it,....this forum loves sharing knowledge and experiences !

Thanks. Yes, it is my first choice to get it to someone who really knows these engines and carbs. I have the following problems with getting that done;
1) So far I haven't been able to find anyone in this area (Scottburgh, KZN) who does have the mentioned experience.
2) The required run in conditions on the engine means I can't drive it to anyone who is. Also the previous stalling issues would make me nervous about attempting this.

I can tell you now that you have multiple issues. That previous owner seemed clueless on what he was doing.
An Autovilla can achieve 120km/h with no problems. 140km/h with the wind from behind.
Have you got the correct gearbox installed? Since a radiator and grill has been added, you may have had a v6 in there and the gearbox changed to adapt. The aircooled 2l motor had a unique gearbox. Incorrect box will cause it to labour and have no power.
The fuel pump will not be causing your problems.
Badly tuned carbs or carbs in poor condition
Faulty electrics / idle cut out valves, idle jets etc.
Bad timing or faulty distributor not advancing correctly
Motor in a poor state, incorrect compression / ratio or valves leaking
Brakes binding causing engine to strain
