In General, a Mass Air Flow sensor, if fitted, lives between the throttle valve and air cleaner. Inlet air passes through it. So it's difficult to miss. On vehicles that do not use a MAF sensor, they mostly use a Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor.

The Watercooled VW/ Audi forums would be of more help on Polo specific things, many of us Aircooled guys do'nt even know what a 96 polo looks like.
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.
Do'nt assume anything- (While doing fault-finding).
