The camera is not kind to my welding...

The tunnel is not dead straight has bevils here and there, ground a few of them out and then decided to I am dong it in smaller pieces....

Lots more work to go...

Small job tonight.

I was not happy with how the lip to support the treadplate looked and is at the rear of the pan. Could only get spotty welding between the flat bar and what remained of the old pan without melting the old pan... You can see it in the first picture. ..

So in trying to come up with a way to get thicker plate into the joint I made up a plate from 2mm flat bar and have "spot" welded it over the old pan and will now weld the lip to support the tread plate to that...

Some pics attached, will weld the lip tomorrow night..

If it works out I will be redoing the drivers side...

Also a small Pic of a friend and I "forge heating" the flat bar for the lip after the Saturday night braai... Worked like a charm...

Hi All. So got some more welding done this weekend.

Pans are now 99% done. Just grinding and a few little holes to fill.

Need advice. Found a Crack in the frame head when removing the front beam.... Wondering about the seriousness of the crack and open to repair suggestions...
On the bottom of the drivers side.

How is your front beam, is it bent or twisted ?

Could be from a pavement strick

You should be OK to hammer it back and weld it up from both sides.

Then grind clean for beam to sit flush.

The front beam seems 100% Straight.

I think the front beam was put on at some point to sell a rolling chassis... Have to rebuild that and the rear drive train completely anyway in the next few weeks.

Going to heat and clamp to try and close the crack and then weld it and grind it back.

Should be stronger on the weld than anywhere else...

Will continue to update as we go...

Managed to get a little work done this afternoon...

Tomorrow is clearing the whole frame and then primer...

Still have to fix the crack on the frame head as well...

Entering a new phase now.

Managed to finish welding and grinding on the frame and fixed the frame head. Also added a little support where the seats will rest.

I am getting a little flaking on the areas front and back that I think may be from brake fluid residue... Will have to try to clean those up and try again...does anyone have any tips on cleaning metal that has had brake fluid on it?

Cleaned a few other l other parts too before the grinder decided my hand looked to good to not a take a little bite, while I was finishing cleaning the brake pedal up....

Next tasks to prime the bottom, suspensions plates and covers and pedals.

Have bought the RB10 "Bakkie Liner" which is water based for the bottom of the frame. Has anyone used that or have a recommendation for that as we want the bottom to be quite well protected.

Nice going, yes these grinders are unpredictable,

I mainly use a wire brush fitted to a drilling machine for cleaning multi faceted parts,

Less bleeding.....

Keith,.....you must go to Herman for training,...his favourate tool,...angle grinder !!......the other day I used a drill with a wirebrush and it turned my shirt & overall AND some skin with it,.....not nice at all.

So hand aside I managed to spray quite a few components and the bottom of the frame today...

Will be doing the black on top and bakkie lining on the bottom on the 16th...

Managed to lay the first coat of black on the underside and on the other parts.

Will be putting bakkie liner on the bottom of the frame over this black and putting a second and third coat of black on the others parts.

Should I clear coat over the other parts?

Wish to paint the gearbox silver. What type of paint should I use?

Hope to have frame and parts done by Saturday and start on front beam by Sunday.
