Pre-68 Ignition switches

Post by Herbie »

My wife's ‘63 came with a universal aftermarket type ignition switch which was not perfect but worked OK. I then were lucky enough to buy a NOS part (or so I was told) from a guy...still with two VW keys and never been used. I tried to fit it last night.... apart from the wires which just needed new lugs, I could not get the switch to line up with the little hole at the bottom. It is about 5mm too short and about 5mm too high. I googled and found this interesting summary of ignition switches (just scroll down a bit until you pass the sales options). I realised that I had a 67 one instead of the one for 61-66. I will have to do a slight modification to get it to fit. Thought I will share it here as a lesson learnt.

O boy...seems like a T2 Bus ignition switch. Well, a small adaptor plate and it works like a charm.
