V8 midmount Beetle

Post by Bratjie »

I saw this V8 beetle in the multimedia section, "anybody willing to do this?" and I was immediately attracted to it.I have googled a lot for these V8 and found that they are quite popular internationally, while the Americans tend to build V8's up front some other countries prefer the mid mount behind the front seats. This would be the typical project for me but I'll need a lot of research first as I have never seen one locally.

Is there anybody that can give me a heads up or know people I can see for research?
I know very little about suspensions and drivetrains never mind V8 engine's but I'm willing to learn about them. I think first research should establish cost and secondly availability of parts & components.

Me and the missus have even contemplated selling our aircooled's to fund this project but let's see first.

Any body with any info please help?

This idea has been brewing in my mind for a while aswell...i just want to go spaceframe mid mounted subby with 5 speed subby box but same idea...i saw the coolest thing earlier this year at citp pmb...the guy took basiclly a gt 40 space frame chassis and with the motor fitted and all and then instead of putting a gt 40 body over it like you do he put a mk 2 escort panel van body over it...its going to be crazy...i would think one would go the same route...maybe use the cradle design from a gt40 and then just build the front in the shape of a stock beetle pan with modded bug suspentsion up front...and then ofcourse mount a beetle or buggy or whatever on to it...

It would be cool to get the exact specs of that frame they built ... or to just get the solid works file... and then just replicate it

The frame isn't the real problem, Rorty.com sell's the plans with full spec's and what parts to source from wich vehicles, I think they sell for about 150 dollars, so if a few interested guys get together and buy it, it'll work out a lot cheaper.
