Hi All - been checking out this site for months and have eventually decided to pull my finger out of my backside and get my bus running. Its an old Autovilla (little tatty, but usable). I bought a 2L imported motor some 3 years ago, the Gilo adaptor and flywheel, radiator, fan etc. Ive also removed the FI and fitted a carb for ease should I pick up trouble along the road. Pse note that I am not a mechanic so there might be some weird queries on my side but pse bear with me.

Few initial queries:
1. If I recall, I need to shorten the gearbox shaft before fitting the motor
2. Piping beneath combi - i recall that 38mm x 2mm thick should be used?
3. Do I run boil bottles at both the rear and front?

Im busy doing some homework on this conversion, but would appreciate any advice that you knowledgeable folks would have (Im based in Bloem - anyone from Bloem who has perhaps done this before )? Thanks in advance

I've decided to go with the 2L golf motor got mine last week.
By now its installed, an it started up yesterday. Taking it for exh on monday.
The conversion is not to hard, only issue was to find a differant water pump pully, that can work witout the ac an pwr steering pump.
Will upload pics as soon as I can manage to get them smaller, to large to upload.

I've heard of a couple people that uses the 2.0 engines in their Synchro busses, its aparently much better that the 2.1i it came out with. And the enines are rather freely available from these engine importers, cheap to buy and cheap to maintain, and if tuned correctly it will even be a lot better on petrol than a 2l AC engine.

Hi Guys
I have red all the topics and need some info. I bought 2 kombi D/C bakkies without engines. One is a 1981 4 speed and the other a 1984 5 speed. I want to build up one out of the two. I also want to buy a vw golf 2l motor and insert that into the kombi. What gearbox will be best for the 2l motor, 4 speed or 5 speed. I also need adaptor plates and starter. any help and info to get me going on the right track
Thanks

If you have a 5 speed option, use that, it will make up for the lack of torque at lower rpm when using the golf engine.
Adapter plates can usually be found at a company named Gilo Engineering www.giloeng.com

You need to first determine what 4 and 5 speed gearboxes you have. There are different varieties.

I highly doubt the 5 speed is originally to a 1984 model. 1984 would have been 4 speed with 1.9 WBX.

The 1981 4 speed is a rear shifter, later ones are side shift. They are not interchangeable with linkages

Should the 5 speed be from a 2.6i % cylinder, its probably going to cause the golf motor to labour. Rather find a 2.1 or 2.5i 5 speed gearbox.
The kombi's that came out with a factory Golf engine had a very high revving 4 speed box to compensate for very weak Golf motor.

You must also check on your bellhousings. The Golf motor has unique housing with its own starter and unique clutch with unique cross members and mountings. Quite honestly, once you have purchased all these parts to install a Golf engine, you will have spent far more than just installing an original motor.

The Golf engine is really the worst motor to install into a T3 kombi.

Why on earth would you remove a 2.5 5 cylinder to install a golf motor?
