I Feel like a kid on xmiss morning .......


I got my 20lt Golf motor today in a good condition
I got the conversion kit from Gilo
I got 2 Cool dictator system with the harness already mapped for the motor
I got a high pressure fuel pump

All i need now is to get my stuff for the Cooling system

Now I Gotta Get my @ss in gear and get my bus running ....... :hangloose: :hangloose: :hangloose: :hangloose:

Where you get your motor?

I've learnt that 80% of the work on the conversion is the cooling system.

@ flatfourfan Got the motor at an auction place around the corner from me
the car was in a back smash *write OFF

Yes the hard work starts now

there is just a few more things to get before i start **Than i would start a new thread

I also need to Cut the back *when you open the rear hatch (Myne is sealed) so i would need to build a flap to open to view the engine from the top


i managed to get my hands on a box BMW Radiator fan and im going for the caddy Radiator

i have done a bit of research regarding the cooling ....and in SA the best would be upfront

Unless i put 2 radiators in sieries under but time will tell

Yeah, I have spoken to a few people that have done waterpumper convertions on their aircooleds with respect to where the radiator must be for the convertion, and, sadly the best place BY FAR is up front, which means cutting, but unless you have some really rare or scarce model, that isnt so bad.

Amen on up front. Plus you can go with a small radiator.

The thing is, if you play your cards right and do your homework, then the cutting is minimum. I've seen an aussie build on a beetle, where just the sparewheel well bottom was cut out, nothing of the nose or the surrounding body was cut.

Spend tonnes on time planning.

Hi there ppl
Its been a wile since my last update.
The bus has been running as n daly drive for n wile now, onley problems was n sideshaft that came loose an n leaky tappit cover.
Done n couple of 150km an 300km drives. The consumption is on avarage 9.5km/l. I dit gel 11km/l once driving 80-100.
Never checked top speed, but did push it to 150kph, I'd say about 160kph tru speed would be realistic.
So far no regrets, its been a great conversion.

funny that you say that the sideshafts came loose. My buddies synchro did the same, a bit of loctite and all was solved. Great to hear that you're still loving it.

Hi guys
A few months ago I asked about a diesel conversion. From the feedback I decided to go with the Golf Petrol conversion instead.
I have completed most of it by now. Started the motor yesterday and it started overheating. I then found a cracked water pipe connecter. Sorted. Started again. Overheating. It looks to me like the engine goes to a 120 degrees, before the water reaches the radiator. Does anyone please have any advice?
I am running a combination of steel pipe and rubber bends in 36mm to the front. Are there any tricks I should know about? Please, I am going crazy....

have you checked that your thermostat isnt fkd
also, are you sure you have bled the system properly

Starting the motor to get the air out will not help, as the pump will not remove the air but distribute it all over.
You need to fit "Bleed" Valves at the highest points in the system.
You must use a good Antifreeze at the maximum mixing rate that the bottle recommends.
You must run the motor, then switch it off, allow to stand for a few minutes, then only bleed. Repeat this till no more air comes out.
Also remove the electrical thermostat, and look at the heat range, your fan may be coming on too late, fit a Fiat or such type in.
Also look at the Mechanical Thermostat in the block, this may be stuck, or too high value.
The best to do, is drill a 4mm hole into the thermostat, then the air will not get trapped behind it, and fail to open as the hot water can not reach the thing to open it.
This is an old trick I learned at the race track with hotted up motors... :D
DID you fit an header tank, and non opening radiator cap???, as the blow off must be via the header tank.

Got very p!ssed off yesterday.....

While the new motor was going in we hit a speed bump

The cross member and the flywheel was wrong .....


Gilo only opens in the week so I need to make a plan to go and rectify the error

Hi Toni Z. I tested the thermo on the stove in a pot of water with a new one.It worked. But I found a leak where steam is blowing out on a pipe joint. I also think I might not have bled enough. Thanx for the info. Going to try bleeding again now.
