1600 Turbo swapped for 1.9 WBX Turbo

Post by Bratjie »

Si I have decided to take the plunge ( amidst a lot of negativety and also some good feedback )

The 1600 TP Turbo engine is being replaced with a 1.9 WBX Turbo that I bought from Driftz a few years ago, for those that can remember the " Baked Bean" was also featured in Speed & sound a while back.

The decision came after I cooked yet another Turbo on the 1600, ( suspect too litle oil drain, may have overfilled it with the last oil change forgetting that the extra sump held a lot of oil and blocked the normal return flow from the Turbo, needless to say I was gunning her on the N1 from Centurion after work one day boosting all the way and after about 20km started smoking ). So we ripped out the engine and found lots of play on the Turboshaft. Decided to strip the rest of the engine out of curiousity. Found no visible damages except for a little crank end play, which could've been a slight oversight on my part when assembling it. All moving parts inside looks good. So I'm taking my hat off to this little daily driven engine after taking so much brutal punishment, gave lots of pleasure at 1.0 bar boost most of the time. The engine will now be reserved for the KG that's waiting for a paint job and so forth.

Will start posting pic's and progress soon.
