Autovilla motor conversion

Post by HippyPete »

Hi guys, am a newbie here, hoping to get some advice. I'm looking at fitting a 2L golf motor in an autovilla, here's a few questions I have;
1) what is the prefered motor to use, 8v/16v, which series (2/3/4), efi/carb?
2) should I can the std auto box? If so, what is a good replacement, and who could make the adaptor plate?
3) what would be a good radiator to use, and in what position? ( have a lot of pattern making and fibreglass experience, so building stuff is not a prob.)
4) what disc brake conversions are locally available?

Looking at doing as much of the work myself.

Thanks, looking forward to hearing from you guys.

Why do you want to fit a motor from a Golf?

Autovillas also already have disk brakes, why do you ask?

Will be picking it up next we, bought it as a project, and thus not running. ( motor in pieces).
I' m planning on travelling a bit with it and would like it to be able to tow a trailer with 2 road bikes, so need a little more power than std, don't really want to go the whole V6 route.

Already has disc brakes? Great, never knew.

Appreciate the feedback, thanks guys.

I would never even consider towing anything with a Golf, so putting an engine like that into a much bigger car is going to be even more underpowered. You will be disappointed with a Golf motor in there. If you want towing power, what about a Lexus V8 if you are quite sure you want to hack it for a watercooled conversion?

I am a big fan of the 2.0 8v Golf conversions , running a injected setup with mp9 is super reliable , engine power is more than enough for towing but gear ratios might be a issue. There is allot of info online reg this . Since you don't have a location listed its a little hard to refer you to someone in your area .
My biggest fear is that my wife sells my cars for what i told her they cost !!

Here's some pics guys. Am going up to Joburg tomorrow, and will drop by Pierre at Dubtech, and see what the way forward is getting a good motor and gearbox in there. Anybody got an idea where I can find new/good lights and lenses from?

I hope you don't need rear lights and lenses mate - I'm pretty sure they are nearly impossible to find for an Autovilla. Front lights and lenses from Volkspares...

Google Gilo engineering and look at all the conversions you might get some answers there. Just remember lots of the engines are now out dated and a camper fully loaded with a trailer with bikes you are going to need to make the right choice first time round so do your homewok first.

Derek, unfortunately the rear lenses are in terrible co nd, although not broken, they faded and cracked up. Will make a silicone mold, and cast a new set in casting resin.

Hi guys, any final decision on the best engine to fit to an Autovilla? Quite tempted to get hold of one and do it up as a holiday vehicle just don't want to use up all my leave getting to my destination!
