What are the differences between 1800 and 2000 heads? Valves only or is there more 'meat' on the 1800's? The engine I'm buying is a 2000 so maybe I can use 1800 heads or do the 2000 heads and install larger valves? The 66 crank is probably stronger too but that will be the trade off more cc's or stronger crank. As far as I could find the heads are interchangable so it should be easy to swop them.

Some pics that I have saved over time - I think Eben posted them here originally

OK, its not an 1800 head, but a comparison between at 1700 and 2000 head
I am sure other head designs were used

The valve sizes I found and will be changing anyways. The head material was a concern but from the pictures it seems that the 1700 heads have a little more above the combustion chamber. They will be a little smaller but can be opened up for the bigger cylinders.

Thanks Tony

Now I'm still trying to decide which route to go.

Edit: I think I have it the wrong way around the 2000 have more meterial?

Main bearing availability for type 4... What is the latest update?

Impi, what is your experience. Type 4 main bearings are available again overseas, (after some shortages), but locally...

Masterparts in Kenilworth Cape still had some in last oversize/undersize a few months ago. Now they have'nt got, and can't get any more in any size. Then there is talk overseas of poor quality bearings around lately...
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.
Do'nt assume anything- (While doing fault-finding).

Stay away from the latest T4 mains & big ends made by Silverline, they are way out of spec.
For what it's worth, ignorance has no limits ......

I agree on the silverlines they are crap to put it mildly but Mahle/Metaleve has produced again and with callooker's help I import those. Here and there thera are a few sets lying around but R1000 seems to be the going rate for a decent set of KS Bearings.
if one looks at new production KS the quality has definitely slipped somewhat so it pays to do trail assemblies and measurements.
