356 Disc Brakes

Post by Mustang Sally »

Hi
I am upgrading my 356 a little. We've fitted twin downdraughts that's given her nice attitude on acceleration and a deep husky voice!
Still running drums all round that are fine most of the time but sometimes give a nasty unexpected bite on the front. I am thinking about converting to disc brakes but first quotes were a bit intimidating. What should I expect to be spending on discs and where can I look?

Cheapest option will be the Mk1 Golf Disk brake conversion kit - I got it on the buggy and I am very happy with it. You might need adapters to get it back to your original PCD though. Speak to Calooker here on ACVWSA for prices.

(Not my pics, but you get the idea?)

Not sure of the current prices, but they will still be cheaper than having an accident that could have been avoided.
I think about R3K for the kit is about what you can expect to pay, excl install, front only

I'm planning the same on my speedster. Using a mix of second hand parts and new stuff from a mk1......Price is just over R1800 for the lot. I don't want to use adapters.

I have the original VW 5 hole rims and they look great with the Porsche hubcaps. Not keen on changing wheels. Volkspares quoted me R3800.00 for complete front kit but then need to go with Golf rims. Kit for my rims seems like its going to be around R6500.00. Any other suggestions?

Oh and any plans about fitting a spare wheel?

Go with 1st option, but get adaptors to change from Golf wheel back to your wheels.
So you keep your wheels you like.
just get the thicker addaptor, ask on the forum, as some of the guys can supply them, the thin ones rip the threads.

If this means keeping my old wheels and includes everything, including adapators, then I am officially a fan! Pleas advise how I go about getting hold of the goodies. :D

R3400 is for what you see in the pics, all new parts.
Includes new bearings & seals

If you need adapters to retain your stock 5x205 wheel add R1200

Import kit with MC for 5x205 wheel R7740

I am definitely interested and I would need the adapters for the stock wheels. How do I go about ordering?

The kit from Calooker is a winner! :D
Unfortunately - as these things are wont to do - once the pretty new discs and calipers were on, the slightly worn kingpins and tie rods ends just looked and felt plain nasty. :(
So now we are doing those as well. :D

So MS, where is the "PITCHERS" so that the rest of us can see how to go about it, how long did it take you to install???

Installation of the discs was only a couple of hours. Small snafu with bearings that was easily fixed - original 356 had stepped stubaxle. We have the VW tapered ones. Getting the old tie rod ends off, however, is a bit more of a female dog! Once done will load some pics to stimulate drool glands.
