Hi all, any local suppliers for back hatch and engine lid rubbers for the 71 westy? Need a better seal on both of these. Pretty pricey to import...

Autostyle has in stock for the engine seal. Not cheap though

This seems to be a rubber which is used on quite a few different places on the Bay.

VW Heritage

Vintage Kombi in PE also carries stock of the boot and engine seals. Ask for their prices as well.

These 2 parts must have the proper moulded rubber varities. Extrusions from Proauto rubber doesn't work properly.

Make sure you specify the early bay bootlid seal. The last variety that VW Heritage has been supplying is even in Genuine VW packaging, but its sourced from the Brazilian build bays and doesn't fit properly.

Jaa Brian, I also went that route on my rebuild initially, thought it was the business that these guys had all the right "looking" stuff.. Fitted my windscreen and first winter rainfall, I saw water on the INSIDE of the glass\rubber! Turns out it somehow seeps between the glass and the rubber!
Got the proper stuff from VW Heritage 4 years ago, and I've never seen water inside the windows since..

There are guys that are rebuilding busses and because they don't intend keeping it, they short-cut this step, and you only find out afterwards when the nice paintjob starts bubbling.

You need to spend and pay in certain areas if you want the rebuild\bus to last bud.

I have used pro auto rubber for the glass years ago on my fleetline. It leaked badly.

Since the day I got my panelvan 10+ years ago I had generic pro auto rubbers sealing off the rear hatch and engine lid. I do not go out driving in the rain but have never had any leakage problems around the hatch or engine lid. Im happy with the pro auto around the hatch and lid, but will not use it for sealing windows.

These are Wolfsburg West rubbers and unless I did not fit them correctly they dont seem to fit 100% on both sides.
