Yes, it was Pine's fasty, which became mine. I fitted the carpets and a beetle motor and my daughter drove it for a while.
Been standing for about 2 years.

Re: Not 1967 but 1968 Fastback with type 4 FI motor
Hi 69bug,
Good to hear.
Would love to get more history of it if you have.
Did you have any problems with the drive gear, suspention or other parts that I would urgently have to look at.
am thinking of 1st doing the rust inside the car, Nearly done.
2nd, Then to refit all soundproofing, and upholstry.
3rd, then to do the motor
4th descale, derust and recoat the bottom.
5th get it running.
so if there is someting then I can repair it before the big surprise when the motor starts turning.
Well have worked out how to remove the paint with out flat spotting it with a sander , or with having forever peeling paint becouse the stripper is still active , I have tested a small part with a heat gun and scraper, and boy, does the paint fly off leaving only the original primer

Re: Not 1967 but 1968 Fastback with type 4 FI motor
As said before, the fasty was used for a while before being parked up (was actually a parts car for another project) brakes were done and no other problems. But remember the car stood for about 2 years. The bonnet release needs a new cable.
Cant remember anything else serious.

Re: Not 1967 but 1968 Fastback with type 4 FI motor
Thanks for the "heads up" bug69
Will be doing ALL the parts, as well as brakes, once the car is running, but long term use is more informative then short road test. THANKS !
Pine, could you tell me more about this car please, and maybe who you got it from.
As this is only a ACVW forum and some of you asked about my other resto - projects, here is a pic of two.
Have found a rotten sill on driver side, will be cutting it out and rewelding new one in.
The normal battry box will also have to be replaced, but this time will also get a Polyprop battry box to hold the battry.
Till next time

Nice DKW stationwagon or "Universal" as it was officially called.
My grandfather had a dark blue one, and my father had a white DKW Junior.

Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.

What wheels are you planning??
This is one awesome build - I was a little afraid of the Jetta chassis/Type 3 body idea
Factory Black Type 3s are super rare in this country. I only know of one other one, but it's been butchered with a Golf engine

Re: Not 1967 but 1968 Fastback with type 4 FI motor
Will see about the wheels, need to see the runnig car to get a feel for the type of wheel.
Not sure about all the chrome window serounds either, want to leave off the overriders on the bumpers, What do all you guys think, ........?
Trying too get body with out pan back home, for the Jetta project, still in the air....
Factory Black is nice if all the chrome is on plus more, But I do not like Black, incerdently, the Autopivilion, in Uitenhage has one (nice from far but far from nice)
I am hoping the Metalic red (GM red) with 2 coats of clear with White seats, and a touch of black (small parts) will look good Now you see why I dont want to much chrome.
PS the Morris 10 was a 1946 & DKW a 1958

I posted this one a while ago on the Forum, after seeing it in JohannesburgDawie wrote:Nice DKW stationwagon or "Universal" as it was officially called.

Hubcap then replied with this interesting trivia
Hubcap wrote:I know this one well. Bert Strubling from Rhein Motors has been servicing DKW's since forever! That blue wagon, or Universal to give it its correct name. has been a familiar sight in Marshall street for over 30 years - just gets more patina with the years. It is a 1958 model - 3 cyl 900cc.

Re: Not 1967 but 1968 Fastback with type 4 FI motor
well the Morris was impossible to drive and the DKW was a good car, but strainge.
Back to the Fastback.......
As you can see under "Parts", I am thinking of making a mould for the TYPE 3 DASH
As the cost is so high for the moulds, I want to know if others would like to order One, and how much you think you will be prepaired to pay for one.
It will be of 3mm UV stable ABS (harder then the std. dash), but of Black Leather finnish.
No speaker holes, you want, you drill.
Trying to take a poll on demand, what about export ??

Re: Not 1967 but 1968 Fastback with type 4 FI motor
Today we have been packing all chrome parts for African Platers in JHB,
Cut out the rust around the battry box and built a new battary box from thick 1.6 mm steel, as can be seen, the parts are only tacked together, will be TIG welded in the morning
Have also cut out rusted sill, and tack welded in the new one, ready for TIG Welding.
The small parts have been refurbished with rust removed and a good coat of paint ready for the big assembly when all is done.
Seats and carpets are also beeing done, so all isfine, for now.
69 bug ;- May I ask you what you paid to fit the carpets, they are good, but for me, the wrong coulor
As can be seen in " Parts" I have started making the mould for the type 3 dash, will show you wat it looks like. Hope its excelent.....

Blitz;- Thanks, yes the car is solid, this is why I wanted a car from "INLAND" Had it come from Here in PE , or Durbs', by the see, then it would have been easy, just retain the Swiss Cheese look.
69 bug ;- Thanks for that, yes the carrpets are excelant, well cut and edged, I am actuly using them as cutting templates, that that good. to bad that they will not fit into the Coulor scheme I want.
Blitz ;- You 1st on the list for these carpets.

Re: Not 1967 but 1968 Fastback with type 4 FI motor
Hi Bugger,
The list goes on a bit,
F/bumper
R/bumper
4 Overriders
2 head light outer rings
2 headlight inner ring
2 headlight reflectors
1 horn ring (seeringwheel)
1 bonnet nose piece (2 parts)
2 door treadwell sills
2 wiper arm and body and spring complete
2 ashtray outer body & seround.
3 gauge outerrings (1 big 2 small)
3 gauge inner ring (1 big 2 small)
1 rear boot numberplate lamp holder & body (2 pieces)
1 bonnet VW badge
20 Bumper bolts (10 small 10 big)
Now after all this, they can only give me a quote on site of goods, as the amount of work will deternim the price.
But after all these years of restoring cars, there is only one place that will do my chrome, and thats African.
They will strip the old chrome off, then repair any defects, by welding or panalbeat, then polish and then rechrome. Not like these othe guys that flat polish and chrome on top, when you look again the wind blows you chrome off.
Will inform you of price and will photo stuff when it returns.
