Re: Not 1967 but 1968 Fastback with type 4 FI motor
Hi All,
This thread will be a bit thin while the car in in the spray shop.
Will be doing the loose parts 1st, then the body, so as to protect the loose parts, in My store, during this long process.
Here are a few of the car, as hopefully this will be the last time , looking like this, and more looking like...........(will have to wait)
During this wait................. ................. I have scouted around for other parts, such as 15 " wheels, as I do not want to overload the motor with high rev's, because of small wheels. Man, I have a 2000, with lots of power, so I need BIG wheels to turn it into speed, (not oil leaks)
Also doing the clocks for the dash, speaking of which, for those that have not seen the DASH thread, http://www.aircooledvwsa.co.za/viewtopi ... 72&t=20365
will be pleased to know that the mould should be ready for 1st off test on Tuesday,
Also having all locks re-barrelled to the same key, and fixing up the side light window lock arms.
Still waiting for the Chrome to come back, but have received some of the light fittings, and other small parts.
Have found a "Small Gold Mine" here in PE, as there is a guy that has a hole yard full or VW beetle parts, will post pic, if he will let me, later.
Have started working on my "GOLDEN TRILOGY" (Fastback / Beetle / Split Bus) Have the Fastback, Waiting the arrival of the Beetle, and still looking for the Split Bus.
Well till Tuesday,
Happy Egg hunting.

Re: Not 1967 but 1968 Fastback with type 4 FI motor
Hi All,
With the spray work taking timmmmmmmmmmmme.................................
I am doing the small things that I wanted to do once I start assembly.
So the arm rests were repaired by inserting steel stiffeners in to the broken joints, then repaired with 10 minute epoxy.
Then I reworked the Steering lock, switch arm and mount body to new ready to match the new interior colour schema.
Busy with the door side panels, but will photo them when done,
Till next time.

Re: Not 1967 but 1968 Fastback with type 4 FI motor
Hi ALL,
good day in this thread,............
Have got prototype dash back and looks good.. (see http://www.aircooledvwsa.co.za/viewtopi ... 72&t=20365 )
This will work out fine as I will hide the old dash under the new one, (for future archaeologists to find)
This will give it volume, or you may want to fill it with expanding foam.
Also treated myself with a new Boot trim, for the Type 4 motor that has now finally got BIG,and has become a nice strapping young 2000 cc. (mother and father very proud) buy the way its made of 2mm alum. so can be bent, plated, polised, brushed, etc.etc.......
Buy the way I hear you ask .."how do you fit them"........ Well I will be counter sinking screws into the one to match the existing boot holes, and then epoxy gluing the top brushed one on top. Then I can bolt it on from inside the boot.
Buy the way I still have 8 more, should there be any buyers......
Till later....

Re: Not 1967 but 1968 Fastback with type 4 FI motor
I thought they lost the rear engine mount end of 1967, the 68 didn't have that anymore, or am I a year early on that? Was it only in 1969?eben wrote:...the give-away? .... the fuel-flap arrived in '68retrovan wrote:
the fasty is a 1968 and not 1967.
One of the challenges will be to fit an engine hanger bar in there to take up that movement on the T4 engine, since you cannot easily use the rear engine mount.

Re: Not 1967 but 1968 Fastback with type 4 FI motor
It would seem that my Fastback was a midyear build, MAYBE it was made in 1967 but shiped and assembled in 1968, I was also confused..
The motor mount has been removed, .. in such a way that it can be replaced, ..should I sell the car, and I am fitting new mounts on ether side for the type 4 cross bar mounting, this will STOP the motor twist.... it will look like it was made for it when complete.
Although I am making some changes to the car to make it more drivable, as a every day car, the next owner, should there be one, will be able to return the car back to stock with minimal effort or expense, Also retaining all parts for this.
The reason I do it this way, is because I have fully RESTORED my 1946 Morris 10, and had to sell it because it stayed in storage, as it was totally un-drivable, and unsafe as a every day car. Also doing the job properly, with everything perfect, as this car will stay in my collection.

Re: Not 1967 but 1968 Fastback with type 4 FI motor
I had this prob when I did the Razor. Dave came up with a engine hanger bar at about the same time as I discovered it on the 1969 T3 at a show in UK, and I saw one on a T4 engine. All at the same time. The 1969 Fasty I just stripped for parts also had the hanger bar. If VW went from the little rear mount to the hanger bar, it must be better, right?

Re: Not 1967 but 1968 Fastback with type 4 FI motor
The type 3 motor had a central pivot, which means the motor on heavy acceleration and heavy decompression, will twist, to the point of destruction, with possible tearing the drive shaft seal. I have even heard some fokes contribute the floppy gear shift, that type 3 are prone to, to this.Ron&Gill wrote:I had this prob when I did the Razor. With the type 4 cross bar mount, this seams to be cured, as I have not heard this happening on a type 4.
I do think they used the same on the later buses, but I may be wrong..

Re: Not 1967 but 1968 Fastback with type 4 FI motor
Yes, its because the rear torsion bar tubes and gearbox forks are "soft" mounted on the pan, the whole engine and gearbox can rock forwards and backwards, stopped only by the nose cone/hockey stick... oops.
That rear engine mount stops that. I thing they went for the hanger bar to make access easier, that rear engine mount is like cap on a rum bottle, always in the way...

Re: Not 1967 but 1968 Fastback with type 4 FI motor
Main reason for the engine hanger bar on the Auto Type 3s was because the gearbox was too big to fit on frame horns, hence they did away with the frame horns and ran the front mount bar.retrovan wrote:The type 3 motor had a central pivot, which means the motor on heavy acceleration and heavy decompression, will twist, to the point of destruction, with possible tearing the drive shaft seal. They then standardized and used it on the manual cars also from '70.
Very easy to mod the standard Type 4 engine bar to fit onto a type 3. Just need to shorten it a tad and weld on some angle iron, bolt it close to the bumper brackets.
If it's too low, you're too old

Quite correct. And for anyone looking for the proper type 3 centre mounting:Ron&Gill wrote:Yes, its because the rear torsion bar tubes and gearbox forks are "soft" mounted on the pan, the whole engine and gearbox can rock forwards and backwards, stopped only by the nose cone/hockey stick... oops.

Starting to get withdrawal symptoms,
The Fastback is still in the spray Shop,
Will have to work on the Beetle to overcome the pain.
At least the Dash's will be going out next week, feel like Santa, make a few guys happy.

Went to see the Fastback during "Visiting Hours" last week, They ran out of paint, so will be getting more paint on Monday. Then hopefully..............
Pissed off that the 1st Dash will not be permanently fitted into MY Fastback 1st.
But Sh#t happens, as least I am still working on the Beetle, which will be running this week.
Lets see whose picture with new dash, gets on the forum 1st.......
