Know anything about lighters?

Post by GavinHuart »

Hi,

Not too clued up on period accessories on these dear vehicles, but this one certainly intrigues me. Have a squiz at the lighter on the dash just under the radio and tell me what you think. From what I have found on the net, it's apparently from a split window bug... Looks pretty factory-fitted to me but this model is a '62. Any suggestions? It still works btw. I had to fiddle about with cleaning contacts but as the button is pressed, it gleams into life. Having said that, the original element soon wore from mesmerized onlookers pressing away much to their delight. The 6volt element was incredibly impressive on the 12volt system :D I have since had to re connect a 12volt element. Sad but the original was too far gone... Now we take a little longer to gleam ;)

I have a 60s style VW lighter and it looks different to that one, but I don't know anything about the different VW factory lighters. Lighters were dealer fitted; I don't think you'll ever find a factory fitted one.

That lighter is the same that came standard in all the metal dashboard DKW/ Auto Union models in the 50's and 60's. The others used the conventional push-in pop-out type. The Borgwards from that era also had them as standard equipment. All the DKW and Borgwards were 6 Volt.
