5x205 stock wheels and disk brakes

Post by DDunc »

I want to put disk brakes on my bug I am building
I really want to keep my stock 5x205 wheels, in my opinion mags and bugs just dont go together.
Volkspares sells an EMPI disk brake kit with 5x205pcd wheel mounting but its quite pricey, the golf disk brake kit is a lot more affordable.
Now my question is, can you put adapter plates onto the 4x100 disk brake hubs to fit the 5x205 wheels?
I have been told that it is not possible, but I just dont see why not

Also would wheel geometry be affected, ride height, wheel offset etc??
I want to keep it stock as far as possible

Can anyone help to clear this up cos I'm getting confused by different peoples different opinions, Thanks :D

Yes you can get adaptors to take it from 4X100 to wide 5

If you run disks it is going to push the wheels out of the fenders.

So it's not possible to keep the stock wheels and run disks with adapter plates without pushing the wheels out then?

Well how about this...
I Picked these up from Volkspares yesterday
Apparently they were manufactured by Stilton Engineering, a full set of brake disks with hubs and calipers and handbrake attachment, and... 5x205pcd and... the original wheel offset is maintained, very similar to the EMPI kit except locally made.
So they need a bit of work, one of the rear disks is cracked, will need to get a new one made, some new paint, pads, bolts etc... :hangloose: :)

Anyone seen any of these before?

Try clicking on the pics, they open in a new window
If you want some more detailed pics of them and would like me to measure them or make drawings or something, just let me know, I'd be happy to. But I'd only be able to do that on the weekend...

Is it me or have they used a solid Golf disc for the front as an adapter :?

It is like a reverse adapter, where the the disk is mounted as an appendage behind the hub (the hub which looks like a golf disk is used to mount the wheel).
Instead of an adapter in front of the wheel hub, the conventional way, to mount the wheel onto the hub with an adapter.

So it looks like a standard golf hub/disk base with an alternative mounting method?

If you look at a normal brake drum the wheel is mounted on a flange which forms the body of the drum, in the case of this disk hub the mounting flange would be the disk itself, it's basically the same as the drum hub except without the outer drum ring, and it's obviously also a bit thicker.

So here you can see how the drum and disk hubs are similar and are used in alternative mounting arrangements, using their properties to engineer a simple solution.
That is what i referred to in the beginning of this post

I have been told that it is not possible, but I just dont see why not
In this case it seems it is possible with a bit of ingenuity, I find the design of these brake disk hubs quite interesting and thought that other's would also

Ok I've stripped those brake discs
They're definitely custom machined, each component is unique and the two front hubs even differ slightly :?
However they seem quite useable and solid

The one rear disk is cracked , it was cross drilled, and the others are a bit worn, now I need to get new disks, but the disks have been custom made too
What are brake discs made of?
I think I could machine them myself but I dont know where to get a billet peice of (whatever brake disks are made of) to machine them from thats big enough, can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks :)

Speak to Garin at VS the last time I spoke to him about the kit you got, I saw that the rear disk was broken and he showed me a set of new ones as replacements but he wanted too much so I didin't take the kit.
