How would you CREATE [surface] rust?

Post by Merlin »

I know there are machines able to create the effects of weather on small objects, but how would you go about creating that 'old' "Rat" look in a short time, on a slightly larger item?

I've considered sandblasting the object in Mind, and then leaving it outside in the rain for a week or so, possibly with Vinegar rubbed over it, or something similiar...

I'm looking to create that years-old complete [SURFACE] rustbucket look...

*grin*

Paint stripper like Nitro Mors (available at hardware store) and some swimming pool acid after that, it will strip everything clean off (including the rust. The metal would start rusting within a day......why?

One of a few possible ideas for something down the line...you'll have to wait and see Didi. ;)

Thanks for the tip. :)

I vouch for the pool acid. I spilled some pool acid on one of our sewage drain covers and I am now sitting with the ideal effect you are loking for. It has gone from black to a nice dirty brown colour

Leave it parked in a yard for a few years, fill it with chicken shit, sure it will rust... its amazing how badly it rusts vehicles, even in dry climates!

Merlin, if and when you do use the pool acid, don't expect to see the result immediately. Once you try the acid, let what ever you are doing stand for a day or two after your first coat so as to get a better effect.

Was planning on 3 days...need to find a suitable sealant first...that stops the rusting underneath, ie: surface rust that won't continue to rot the metal underneath over time...

Thanks for the help HR, and the rest of you. :)

Why dont you try and paint rust. Don't know how to do it but have see it at Ratanga Junction and Ushaka. The ship in Ushaka is made from concrete but it looks like an old rust bucket.
