Hi, new around here Got 2 type 1's a 73 that my dad bought new and a rusted up 1960 something, red in colour but in a real state.

Looking for someone to help me with the project. Need to plan what I want to do, got a fair idea of what that is. Any body that can draw to assist, I'm in Centurion. Be it by hand or in PS please assist.

Hi. I am Gerald and have aquired a 74 1600, in green, identical to my first car in the late 70's in Rhodesia, as it was then known. The memories were too great to pass this unit by! It is in absolute original condition, complete with owners manual (1 owner since new) 56k on the clock FSH and even has the original spare wheel, spare can of oil and original jack. I is not running to well so I sent it in to a supposedly adept mechanic. 8k later it's actually worse, this after new clutch, rings, carb kit, distributor cap and leads were fitted. So am a bit stumped at what to do. I know this motor well, it has the solex 34 pict carb but no matter what I do to the timing, or carb settings the misfires continues and black smoke pours out from the exhausts when revved. I noticed that the float chamber level is not adjsutable and read with horrro about the plug issue on another member's topic on burnt plugs. Ironically my # 3 plug also does this. I am looking for someone who is an expert to asist here. Any names and contact numbers would be greatly appreciated. I live in Cape Town. By the way, a great website, very informative and well attended.

I am quite new to the forum and appreciate the site. The last time I owned a volksie bus, "Internet" was a sci-fi term. I recently, after 13 years ago having to sell my bus (divorce) , have been fortunate enough to stumble upon a 1967 2000l bus for R5000-00, brand new tyres, recon engine and I drove it home. Needs a small bit of DIY and we are on the road.

Hi all,

I have recently returned to CT after almost 11 years living overseas. Much to my delight I "discovered" my Dad has kept our '72 1600 beetle under cover for the last 13 years, waiting for me to return. My dad bought the car brand new in '72 and it was in daily use right up until around 1989, by when it was pretty knackered. At the time I was in high school and very much into bikes, with my Suzuki RG50 taking up most of my time and space in the garage. When I hit 17 I started to realise I was going to need a car ....

I grew up just around the corned from a guy called Anton van Riet (I think that is his surname), who owned an amazing black and yellow beetle that was highly modified. He and Dave Ingle used to work on the car and I would make a nuisance of myself hanging around watching. I remember he also fitted a straight cut gearbox, built by a guy who lived in Pinelands in CT, and the car was amazingly quick !

Thanks to Anton the bug bit (so to speak) and I started ripping appart the '72 with grand visions of building the best cal look bug in CT. Unfortunately my budget didn't match my vision and for various reasons the project stalled. I got into racing and spent a few years competing in CT in the clubmans series at Killarney, the cost of which killed any hope of finishing the bug. My Dad eventually had the car recon'ed in about 1996/7 by a small company called "Radical Beetles" (I think) in Mowbray, after which my sister used it for about 2 years before it took up station under the car port at my folks house, where it has stayed (except for the occasional run to the shops) until now.

At last I have the means to start building the car I envisioned years ago. Luckily it is still in good shape, with little rust (Thanks Dad !). I plan to start with a brake conversion, then sort out the motor, finally do the body. Luckily my father-in-law has an engineering business and my brother-in-law is into cars (mini's unfortunately), but with them and my Dad on board I have a pretty good team to help.

Will post in the project section to keep you updated.
