Very Nice 55 Oval

Post by Chris »

I have a friend that has a genuine RHD 356 Porsche and a 55 Oval.I went to him today to speak to him about bringing the cars to the Beetle 75th Birthday. He agreed and then we started talking about the 55.

I've known for a while that he has fitted a 365 engine along with 356 brakes to the car a long time ago.The car has an adjustable front suspension and the rear has also been lowered. He recently took the Cowley exhast system off and replaced it with a proper performance 4 into 1 system.

The interior is immaculate and he takes the Porsche Mangels off when it's in daily use because he is afraid that someone will steel them. While I was taking pics,he says to me "here's the keys, take it for a spin".I protested saying that I don't want to drive his car but he insisted.

Man,I took it around the "block" and I will tell you this much,it put a HUGE smile on my face.It has almost what seems like and endless suply of torque and it just keeps going up to ther red line in every gear. The acceleration is awesome, but what struck me is how smooth the engine is over 1500 rpm.At lower rpm's the cam makes the whole car shake.

vdudbulli phoned me while I was driving it and he could hear the rumble of the exhaust over the phone. The only draw back is that it's very low and it tends to scratch when you go over speed bumps and the ride is hard but understandable with the lowered suspension.

The car will also be at George this year as he will be towing a trailer with 2 motorcycles that he will be exibiting there.
