Got home from a great weekend away, thought it would be a nice change to actually work on a much neglected ACVW. She wouldn't start, 6V battery and all. Checked, water levels low... filled it up, charged, plugged back in and voila, starts first time!
But the idling is a little rough and the engine sounds like it's missing... Do a visual inspection of the points to check for wear/gunk/who knows, looks fine, can't check the points gap, as I need to buy a set of feeler guages ... Found my timing light and set the timing using the static method. Timing was out by what I guess would be 5 degrees!
"Keeping your VW alive" is recommended, no, make that compulsary reading for anyone who owns an ACVW. I am embarressed to say this, but it was the first time I actually set the timing myself
She does run a little better now, so it wasn't a wasted exercise, and next time I have to set timing,it will take me less than half the time!
Don't know why it feels so good when you get it right (and the little light comes on at just the right time
