Lets talks square weave carpets

Post by flatfourfan »

Okay, so who do I have to kill around here to get my hands on something local that's similar?

I'm looking for an oatmeal colour. I can finish it and line it myself, I'm just looking for some local options.

I have noticed that SheetStreet is selling some bath mats (those with the thin rubber backing) that have the same weave patern. They had no Manufacture lable on and the staff in the shop is unable to tell me where it came from. It could be local made. That was the closest to German square weave I have seen locally so far.

I have tried most of the local carpet shops in and around Pretoria with no luck, they all just look at the sample and say "No sorry have not seen this for years, but try so and so, perhaps they can help you"

That sample looks like the Sewfine samples from Stateside?

To my knowledge, no known local suppliers. Rui any ideas, its originally from Germany.

This is pretty much what I thought would be the case. My first thought was also the bath mat guys and I've even found bath mats that are 1x2 and I'm half in the mood to buy a few and make the sections that I need if I can't find out who's the supplier.

This is one thing on my speedster that I think can make or break it. Normal carpets just don't look the same.

I'll do a bit of searching this weekend at sheet street.

Best places to look would be car upholstery shops, they may have something close, what town you in? Pretoria Marabastad is a good place if you close by.

CHeers, keep us updated.

Sarel, I'm a stones throw away from marabasterd (lol) Will pop in after work tomorrow, I've used the auto trimmers there before, this time however, I'm going to do it all myself.

A thread (sic) close to my own heart. Please let me know who and where can come up with goods. Need mine in charcoal colour, but would settle for oatmeal if it is square weave. Wolfsburgwest does the correct mats for my 58, but transport costs makes that a last resort....

Thank you for raising the question flatfourfan!

i stand under correction, but some of those bathroom mats are manufactured by a company called Waltex. they do all sorts of matting from natural coir to the synthetic ones. they are in Cape Town and could possibly have a branch near you.otherwise try Nouwen or Van Dyke carpets.
hope this helps

I have also had a look at the nouwens range before.
The Rustic look is also contains some wool, just like the original VW carpets, and look pretty close:

Maybe we should buy and split a roll ?

This might also work:

Though the Nouwens look like a closer match to me...

waltex and some other smaller companies buy end of rolls wich they sell to the public at much lower prices.get in contact with builders warehouse (carpet dep.) and ask those sales guyz were such busineses are. there fitters would (which is outsourced) will have a good were to find it.
