Hi guys I have not been around for quite a while, searchin for my Bay Window bus high & low.

Found this one, for the right price and she has a lot of potential, body still good relatively little rust.


At the moment she has a watercooled 2E Golf Gti engine complete with EFI - I must say she is not slow


Ill update you guys as I progress in building my camper van, she needs a fair amount of work to get her looking sweet again, but all in good time - and of course the other big thing - Money

I need the indicater stalk assembly, as its missing and the indicators runs off a toggle switch, as do the dim & brights - thats not cool ! Are they still relatively easy to get hold off ?

You can get the indicator stalk/ switch, I think Shelleys had them advertised here on the forum, I'll try find the thread.

You can have a squiz on ebay, I have a 74 Bay and the stalks are different from around 72/3 to 74.
Later Bays have these:




The 73/74 Bays have these which don't have the electrical connections for a washer pump ....

Trying to make something graft here for the electrical motor ... 'n boer maak 'n plan.


If you want new it's v. hard to find and it'll cast you an arm and a leg.

Been busy all of saturday to sort out the throttle cable it was a bit tough to move and liked to get stuck at full throttle - not fun
Also sorted some wiring out wrt the lights and adjusted the headlights cause they were pointing everywhere except forward

Thank for the info guys Ill check Shelleys out - maybe they can courier them to me. Also need to reset/adjust the rear torsion bars - her ass sits way too low for my liking, perhaps the added weight of the golf engine and she has a masive towbar that seems te have been built from train rails lol !

Thanks man - well, they are brand new rims and brand new 14" tyres, so maybe later in the project Ill look around for some original rims with hubcaps.

T 'was a busy weekend for sure. I need some advice - I am not a mechanic at all, so I am a bit clueless how to adjust the rear torsion bars - do you guys know anybody in or around PTA that can do this for me ? is it a big job? Dankie

So me and a good friend tackled the rear torsion bars this saturday - hectic to say the least - 36 years of rusted bolts on the rear suspension was lekke . . .

Thanks, was tough though them bolts were rusted tight to say the least. Ill take some proper pics this afternoon of her on the level. Still a lot of work to be done, but, its a project and so I will do it as time and $$ permits.

Must say after the new Tierod ends and proper adjusting of the steering box and wheel alignment, she drives quite lekke, allthough there is still a slight pulling to the left when braking hard despite adjusting the rear drums perfectly equal, but I guess that is to be expected from 36 year old technology.

A small update
So on monday we decided to reboot the CV joints on the bus, as a CV joint "joint" asks me R550 per side just to fit new boots they mad

Both sides boots, new bolts and grease costed me around R300 - so I have some money left for beers lol
