Storm is a brewing..

Post by dsan »

From the Merc owners club forum I belong to

Last night I attended a meeting where the President of SAVVA (South African Vintage Vehicle Association) gave us a heads-up on new regulations on the way. SAVVA is in deep conversation with the Authorities to try and help owners of oldies and lefthand cars get through the system.

Some highlights (I will post more detail as I get it):
1. New left hand registration is out of the question
2. If you left hand is currently registered on your name, then it is ok
3. Change of ownership will require RWC. It will not pass - period!
4. All cars 10 years and older (rolling 10) will have to do a RW yearly
5. SAVVA is trying to get pre 1965 extended to a 5 year cycle - waiting to see
6. If your car is found with even slight deviation re RW e.g. tail light out and you are stopped, your disc can be confiscated, you have to fix the problem and get a new RWC before your disc is returned
7. You still have your Mog that you are building up on a pink registration certificate? Time till end Decmber to get it on a blue (ENATIS) form without trouble. Your problems will start when you have to take it for a RWC when you ready to register... it will not pass, irrespective.
8. 5 of the 9 Provinces are already enforcing the new rules
9. Future license fees will be calculated on vehicle weight
10 The so-called "S" license will be cancelled in all instances

Well, this means more lefties leaving the country, what a pity
No sense being pessimistic. It wouldn't work anyway.

Thaaaats Fooooked up!! Our rides are never (well most) gonna pass RW yearly, that's krappo!

Will say what's always said: Why don't they first sort out truck and taxi death traps and the potholes before they decide to nail us for more cash!

Because the taxi industry transport poorer workers, who are the majority voters for the current regime. Fining the taxi association will see them striking and this in turn pisses off the voters.

Now if you target the middle-class, and whilst I hate to bring in Colour but it does play a part here, who are mainly white, they won't really vote for the anc. Subjecting this class to higher taxes and penalties wont cost votes and will ensure revenue comes in.

It might seem a bit tin foil hat but one just has to look at previous attempts at controlling the taxi industry...

This is just plain stupid. This will push most cars in the Cape Flats into the junk yard. Also the second hand car market will fall through the floor as less people will buy old cars. Leaving us with the only real option of buying a new car or 3 year old car and then keeping it until it fails roadworthy and then scrapping it. This isnt viable.

But anyway, my moaning wont solve anything. The cars do need to be safe and road worthy at all times that they are on the road, but this should apply to ALL vehicles in SA, not just old ones.

Yeah TZ is right! ag dumb ass laws! Old cars will have to get RW done annually, yet new cars are the only ones that are meant to carry warning triangles!

Awesome.
