Mild to slightly wild A/Cooled Engine for Bug

Hi to all members in the forum

Please forgive my ignorance (and spelling) if I don't use the appropriate terminology etc associated with Bugs or Air cooled engines as these are completely new to me

1) I've recently been bitten by an addictive bug ... a '58 model to be exact ... and I'm now interested in doing a full restoration but adding an engine with decent performance. The previous owner mentioned that my motor is a +- 1100cc but I suspect it is atcually a very underpowered 1600cc as it has an engine no. starting with SFF ... somebody told me SFF engines are actually 1600cc engines ... is this true?

2) Have any of you guys fitted a 2000cc or close enough mild/ slighly wild performance aircooled to your bug ? What power do make i.t.o KW ... would a 1600cc or 2000cc prove a vehicle with better driveablility and relaiblity ? I'm not looking for Turbo conversions etc but rather something keeping in the theme of the Bug and also making for a nice enjoyable drive.

Well, now that I know you are in Woodmead, I wont say come around to my place in Cape Town...

Further than that, read the guides section and learn a few things about modding engines - you will see that your question is too broad to answer properly.

I would think a nice 1776 or even a 1835cc would do exacly what you would want.Tony is not lying when he says speed cost moola but since you have a driving car there is no reason not to build your hot motor on the sidelines as $$$ allows. I would suggest looking at brakes aswell not that there is anything wrong with drums , but i'm a disc man and prefer to run them front and rear on my cars .Motors like the ones mentioned can be build at a budget so keep an eye on the forum for the parts needed.

@ Splitfan ... thanks for the heads up on braking ... I'm actually trying to source disc conversions for front and rear (don't want my future work of art smashin thru something cos of crap brakes!) Do you have an economical solution ... if you know the ingredients that go into the Golf 1 conversion, pls share so that I can start hunting them down? Original is always best in keeping history but the Drum brakes are just inefficient especially in the wet ! Furthermore ... is the Golf 1 conversion the best economical solution ?

Anybody tried electronic fuel infection out on their motors ? Not the K Jetronic stuff from Brazil / old Golf stuff but rather something like a Gotech / Diktator etc ?

Disc kits are available locally from me,volkspare, Rui ect .The problem I personally have with the "local" kits is the fact that you have to run 4x100 pcd normal golf wheels/mags or adaptors after fitting the disc's.I imported an Empi 5x130 kit for my 58" to run Porshe wheels with no adaptors and have not had any issues with them my bus has a custom set of discs using 911 and 944 stuff this is do able but allot of work and machining was needed.There is no reason that you cant go the efi route if budget allows.Speak to Garin @ Volkspares he would be able to supply everything you need to do this.
