Hi, and welcome to ACVWSA. The vehicle in your picture is a South African experimental car, built by VWSA in the 70's - it had a Beetle chassis, engine and suspension and a fibreglass body. It was meant to replace the Beetle but was never put into production. The one pictured is in the VW Museum - I'll post more info as soon as I find it!
It was 'officially' called Project 1021 - or Ten Twenty-One (the project number). As far as we know, there were 4 protoypes built in 76/77, including a 2-door station wagon and LDV ('pickup'). I took these pics at the VWSA Museum in 2009
Pine, I'll try to get a pic of the concept sketch (not blueprints) I mentioned into this space as soon as I can. August has a home in PE and Jeffreys so he can be difficult to track down at times. I wonder if he'll let me interview him about the concept. What questions would you ask?
August was instrumental in a lot of VW SA's work, especially on the SA only vehicle like the 1992 to 2002 T3 big window Microbus and Caravelle and all the Citi golf upgrades. I have seen another of those vehicles on the road from Uitenhage to Jefferies.
you should see the mid mount Golf powered and gearboxed, space frame beach buggy that they have at Jefferies bay, it is awesome, no body yet but thay are busy with a mould to make one, have no pics but will see if they will send me a few.
Heheh, the project car in Jeffreys has been sitting there as long a I've know the Jukels and probably before that... 1999? The frame is built and sculpting of the bodywork in wood has gootten as far as the windscreen. You have to see the workmanship to believe it. The man is a perfectionist.
Pine, I finally got a pic of that concept sketch. Sadly it has some water damage since I saw it last. August says he has a whole lot of pics of the original 1021 project in J-Bay. I'm going to ask his permission to scan them and share them here!
To top it off... I saw one going the opposite direction (towards J-Bay) on the N2 between Thornhill/Sunnyside offramp and Van Stadens River Gorge this morning! it was a Khaki green colour and no I wasn't quick enough with my camera. I'll be keeping an eye out for it though Rarer than a Schwimmwagen I reckon!
