Convert to 1600

Post by Dappermuis »

Hi

I am considering all my option, but do not want to go the Watercooled route.

What are the pro's and cons of installing a 1600 in my Bay?
I just did replaced the gearbox with a 2liter, 5/6 rib one, and I understand that the 2liter engines have a reliability problem.
Will I loose out on a lot of power? and what 1600 do i then get?

Darrell

Do not go 1600 as you will be disappointed with the power,
Go to the best motor VW ever made, the 1800, get the 1800 type 4, then mod to your hearts content.

I am not sure as to what exactly is in at the moment, all i know is that it has never let me down in the last 6 months, and purrs like a kitten. I've only done gaskets on the carbs, because the petrol leaking from there got me nervous, apart from that this engine has amazed me, when I took out the engine and gearbox i noticed that the carbs weren't in sync, and that the links were on their max, so I just bent the one a little to compensate. nevertheless, did this engine pull strong before and after this mod.

Even with huge air leaks on the intake system did this car take me, and itself, fully loaded with camping stuff, everywhere.

Type four engines
bigger crankshaft
bigger oil pump
bigger pistons and sleeves
huge conrods
bigger clutch
all these things you add when souping up a 1600

weakness
worn carbs replace with 36idfs
valve seats can come loose replace these with a top end overhaul

BTW the 1600 wont live with 2 liter ratios

Dankie vir jou en jou pa se raad...

This is what i thought, just wanted to double check... is it then better to recon the two 32-34 pdsit???? carbs, or make a manifold, and install one carb, like a golf carb or nissan 1400, or what ever works best?

The reason for this is that i need this car to be as reliable, and easy to fix as possible, for longer, overland trips, and i have had my fair share of problems with sourcing the gasket kits for the two carbs
