Hey guys
I was recently browsing one if the german look sites and came across a picture of a Type 4-engined Beetle. This guy was using a Magirus Deutz fan to keep things cool. It looks very similiar to a 911 fanshroud, with the exception that the alternator is mounted on the right-hand side. I assume that this shroud comes of the same Deutz engine that the guys get 102?mm sleeves from....My question is:would it be feasible to use this shroud on Type 4-Beetle conversion? Does it cool the engine efficiently? Is it readily available here in SA? what would I pay for one?Would there be any advantage in using it?
I personally like it for the 911 fan look and if these shrouds are relatively affordable, then one wouldn't have to shell out big bucks on a 911 fan for that true german look. And, it probably sounds wicked...

I assume that what you refer to as a Fan shroud is actually the fan and ring from the deutz engine they differ fromthe Porsche in that the ring just mounts the fan and not a combination of fan and alternator as in the Porsche. That said (there is some integral fan and alternator setups from Deutz
engine but these are not of a size compatible to the VW engine) Bear in mind that these are industrial diesel (Low rev engines) engines The parts are just as expensive as Porsche and then you still need to build a custom fan housing to fit.
What most of those guys running Porshe fans dont tell you is all the overheating their cars suffer from whilst running in town. The Porshe fanshrouds almost never cater for the oil cooler as std.The porshe fan is an axial fan and due to the clock wise rotation favours the right bank of cylinders You will see that deutz used that to teir advantage siting the fan on the left of all inline engines. Other than looks there is no advantage using the Porshe fan in an upright conversion Do a search on the shoptalk forums.

Who cares how it's done in California?

Armand, thanks for the prompt reply..I appreciate it very much..If all goes well, I want to build a T4 engine soon, a very mild daily-driver application...I guess that I can't use the Deutz fan in my application..my best bet is to probably do the Cali Conversion with the T4 cylinder tin and T1 shroud, or may be IMPI Shroud..........
I love T4
