I remember seeing an image someone posted up of a tyre that had white walls vulcanised on the tyre wall by some dude in joburg.
Where is it? I wanna see the work, and i would like an update on the work done and how the tyre is holding up

Hi,
The guy is Ray from Jeppy Tyre Retreaders, 011 614 0462.

Asked him about the vulcanised white walls, but was not convinced, so I got a sett of 15" insert white walls instead.

Have heard from a lot of guys that they slip, but also heard that if inserted correctly, WITHOUT any water,powder, soap, rust, dirt, sand, or other solvents, the rubber to rubber will not be a problem.

So I will fit mine, onto a newly powder coated wheels, by being there when they do them, to see that it is done right, and will report back.

The problem with tyre fitters, is that they can not , out of habit, fit tyres without smearing them with soap water.

Rubber to rubber should not slide., and if it works, I can transfer them from one set of tyres to the next, OR alternate the use of them, by sometimes having them in and sometimes not.

But will post my findings here.........

The tyres (and whitewalls) are holding up pretty well. You have to keep in kind that they have been off the car for a year and is being preserved in a dark corner of my garage as my Ghia is currently at a panelbeater who is a serious contender for the slowest procrastinator south of the equator. Ray at Jeppe's tyres told me that they do a lot of this type of work for the taxi-industry and hey, if they hold up under those conditions...

Its a bit far from Cape Town though.

My memory is kinda sketchy these days but I recall it being between R200 and R250 per tyre.

Thank you!!!!! Sweet. I want to get white walls when the car is finished and I am very keen on not getting inserts. I know cape town is far away, but a plan can be made. Will just cost a fair bit, but if it ends up being reliable through use, I think it is worth it. And cheaper than buying Cokers or the like

For a moment i thought the word was "vandalised" , but after re-reading i see it's vulcanised.

Just wonder if whitewall inserts can still be taken off later after it's been vandalised (sorry vulcanised)

Think very few ACVW's actually had whitewalls in the old days, it was more of an "American craze" at the time.

Maybe one can just stick them with some "bicycle vulcanising solution" if you do it carefully?

Maybe, but I am going for a 60's American customized look and I need white walls to go with black steelies and chrome hub. Will research the bonding shtick you mentioned

New tires are recommended. I know of a couple of dudes had them done by Roy at Jeppe tires and not happy with the results, the vulcanizing peeled off.

As said by Calooker, Heard more bad about vulcanised white walls then inserts, therefore my reason for inserts, if not happy, I just take then OFF. no tyre loss......
