hey guys!
I am starting to think about the wheel and tyre package for my build.
In the next month or so, the wheels should be able to go back onto the chassis, and would like to get this done.

I am enquiring about bringing in genuine white wall tyres and then deciding from when i recieve the (possibly incredibly stupid) prices whether i can go this route or using those pesky inserts.
Maybe you guys can help me in figuring out the sizes for the wheels and tyres.

(Bear in mind, that this is in high hopes as my funds are really taking a blasting at the moment, so it could only happen in like 4 months time. very upset about this)

Front: I would like the standard wheel size. Is it 4.5J wide? Either way, I am looking at 165R15 for the front.
Rear: I would like them a little wider. 5.5J wide? (this will change if the standard size is 5.5J. Hope it isn't). What size for the rear then, 195/70R15?

well, I did something yesterday. Not much but something.
I swopped around the bonnets. The late-model bonnet sits very nice and flush on the project car, and the bonnet from the donor does not. Although, it looks to have the same fit on both cars so I don't know. Btw, the project car was indeed involved in a front on accident. There is folding of sheet metal just behind the petrol tank.
Also, on the project car, the guy who prepped it last grinded off the lips for the rubbers for both the bonnet and decklid! As you can see below.

I also managed to remove the insides of the passanger door (that was more of a mission than I thought it would be. ya ya, 'noob')

Now below you will see images of my petrol cap. The cork is pretty perished and I need suggestions on what to do here. I had a look at the oil filler cap and it had a loose piece of rubber as a seal. (I KNEW I should have taken a picture!) Is there a similar way to fix this?





Anyhoo, I am starting to hit my 'cieling' of abilities with work and available tools. And money. So this project is gonna take a lot longer to complete.
All thoughts on style of wheels and tyres and such are all out the window. Right now, I just want to get the f'kn chassis done. I don't want to even think about what I have to do to get it ready for paint.

Oh, I also need to replace the spring-clips on the rear brake backing plates


The ones that need replacing have been replaced already and have spot welds on them. The rear right corner has one half broken off, so might as well replace on both corners.

Boet, you don't need money to do the tough stuff. It's a labour of love and patience.

You can buy sheets of cork or you can cut your seal out of rubber. You will need a sharp blade, a vernier to measure the old seal and a compass to mark out the id and od of the new one. You're in Cape Town aren't you? Try these guys:

cool, gasket vibe got no issues with, it is what i pretty much thought. but you never know, had to ask...

anyone got advice about the 'gutter' vibe for the rubber seals under the bonnet and decklid?

Please don't cut it off the donor. I am sure the channel can be found off another scrap beetle. I also have the same problem. Where these people got the idea of cutting the stuff off is beyond me. I know you can buy it from overseas. Maybe they stuck the rubber to the lip of the bonnet and maybe a solution ?

I ain't cutting it off the donor.
My old '74 had the channels under the decklid grinded off. They stuck on the under lip of the decklid that rubber with the adheasive side.
Dunno if I want to do that with mine as i like the look of the channels. But will see. Good to know that you can buy new! that is a relief

Just my 5c worth. It may be better to use the bonnet that came with the project car since it all fits and lines up. A ball ache if it does'nt and add the 4th hole/slit for the badge The holes would be hidden by the badge and the fold over tabs on the inside will also hide the difference. By the looks of it, the previous owner preped the bonnet for paint so redoing work already done may not be worth the effort. If the holes don't match up to the pins on the badge one could glue the badge on - not ideal - but an idea

After close inspection, that oval in the background is INDEED my donor car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guess Kobus' oval is not being ressurected anymore.

Anyway. Back to my task at hand. Hopefully the donor will be with it's new owner this weekend, and I will be back to owning only one.
Not much work will be done (that requires spending money that is) because I need the money for deposit on a new place to move into with my girlfriend.
Looking forward to that happening Looking for 1 Oct/1 Nov
