Airport transport

Judging by the mountains in the background, can I assume this is DF Malan airport in the mid-70's?

two things....
i would love to know what airport that was.
secondly..
i never knew the 737's had the bigger engines in those day's

thought they only had the slim looking G.E. engines not the large RR's
any aircraft mac's here that know more about those engines ?

Those days airports were operated by SAA. The Acsa only took over in the 80's i think. Saa had many kombis and beetles. Baywindow doublecabs were fitted with a roof rack and ladder. These were used as pilot's transport to and from planes.

That is still the case today. Certainly for Boeing, not so sure about Airbus.

The thin type 737 engine was the Pratt & Whitney JT8D i think? And some of the larger high bypass turbofans made by GE.

Not a mac but a pilot... Not a 737 but an Airbus A300. The Boeing 737-200's you are thinling of have Pratt & Whitney JT8D turbofans not GE's. The pics were taken at D.F. Malan Airport now known as Cape Town International.

I might be getting old and senile but if that picture was at DF Malan, it's taken donkeys years ago and I doubt if there was a company called Airbus then.

Look at the position of the doors. The shape of the cockpit windscreens. And the thingies below the wings. SAA did indeed operate Airbus A300 planes donkey years ago. Was actually waiting for Variant to comment.
