Got myself a new exhaust after a lot of debate. Its a much better setup.
The old one did about 600km so if anyone is interested let me know.

Sambas in South Africa are good for only 2 things: showing off and sunburn.

I have realised that 4th gear is labouring the engine and the cause for the heat.
If I cruise in 3rd at 50mph at 3000rpm the engine is cold and I can keep my hand on everything in the engine bay. As soons a I go into 4th it starts getting hot.
I currently have a 4.125 gearbox in, would a 4.375 help with the 4th ?

Other than that not much has been happening.
I replaced the roofrack slats as the old ones were dodgy and starting to go missing after trips. The kombi also needs a proper clean, maybe even a sand down and clear coat....fed up with the dust sticking to it. Also fitted some spots to the kombi.

If you want to change to a 4.375/ (1300) gearbox, then look for a SFAR code one.
Some of them came with the same 0.93 4th gear as the late 1600. I tested the ratios on a 77 1300 box, and it had the 0.93 4th even though the owner's manual that came with the car said 0.89.

The 4.375 ratio will give about 6% more revs than the 4.125. If you find one with 0.93 4th in stead of the 0.89, total difference will be around 10% more engine revs at the same speed.

Th test which SFAR box it is, put in 4th gear. (If box is out of car, use pliers or vice grip on selector shaft and put old clutch disc on input splines). Block one drum from turning and lift the other one and mark it's position. Now turn engine or input shaft until drum has turned exactly 2 turns. (Because of diff action when one wheel is blocked, other one turns 2X). If box has the 0.89 4th, input shaft will do 3.89 turns for 2 turns at drum. If 4th is the 0.93 we want, then 4.07 input shaft turns will correspond to 2 turns at drum.
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.
Do'nt assume anything- (While doing fault-finding).

Everything on this kombi is running good, still some tweaking with the engine to get it to run nice enough so that I can get the confidence to take it on a long trip.

Since then I have been adding some more weight to it. Got a full length rack from Jolas and been busy tinkering on some stuff around the kombi.
Dug up the old specs on the Hurst bumpers which Ive had for a couple of years now and started the build. Was quite a mission getting these specs off the guys abroad.
Mr "JeremyRockJock" from theSamba was kind enough to supply the cad drawings.

All the steel for this was not even R250. Had a good scratch around at Brackenfell Staal's off cut bins.
Encountered a problem as no one could do the bends with the radius and degrees. Got hold of Zahier of http://www.flywheelbikes.co.za/ , local bike builder and he was able to bend the pipes for me :hangloose:

Still in Progress:
