Exhaust tip replacements

Post by jmvv »

Since I had a set of taper tips on my first Beetle (Matzibulu) in 1975, I lusted after a set for Petrus.

I found a set that was promptly damaged by the idiot panel beater that repainted the car.

When I lost one of the pipes on the R21, I bought the last set off Volkspares display board and was very chuffed with the slightly deeper sound than the standard pea shooters.

But alas, on a trip from Pretoria, one of the pipes went awol again (and yes I did tighten the clamps properly)

So yesterday I decided to "maak 'n plan" seeing as I could not source a new set of tips.

Off I went to my very tolerant exhaust shop owner in Rosslyn. He allows me to play silly buggers with my own ideas and designs.

I have been after the classic "Monza" look based on silencers that were available back when Beetles could be bought new.

Here is Petrus on the lift with one taper tip missing.

I selected a suitably sized Stainless steel pipe that would fit over the stub on the silencer and had the end cut at a 30 degree angle.

This was welded to the stubs on the silencer and I think the results look quite lekker.

The sound is nice and throaty without being too loud in town and on the open road.

BTW, I have one taper tip in very good condition if anybody needs it..........

Looks good
Camping is cheaper than therapy.

"Wanna sell it" "Yeah, but there's a national shortage on 'for sale' signs."
